| 4.0 marble piggies vs 4.1 prisms | Ears (formerly Royc) Mar 7, 2001 3:59 PM | | Well, as you all know my Ears are still in training but since DueN begged for an immediate comparison, I will give it a shot. First the 4.0s have about 5 hours on them the 4.1s about 1 hour. (DueN - in answer to your question - I have 3 4.0s and 3 4.1s) The comparisons were done without a sub. The 4.1s sound slightly louder for a given receiver volume setting. The 4.0 has more bass. This seems to contradict what Barnes says but it is very obvious to me. The mids and highs on the 4.1 seem more forward (yes Tyson I think I understand what that means now!). Overall I like the 4.0s better, but both sound excellent. I had a friend over today and of course I had to show off my new toys. Her ears are even dumber than mine but her comment was "Wow you can hear all of the different instruments!" Well, that's pretty short compared to reviews done by others but, thats it folks. |
| re: 4.0 marble piggies vs 4.1 prisms | Tyson Mar 7, 2001 5:57 PM | | That is pretty much what I heard when I compared the marble and wood 4.0's. Marble's are more up front, woofer and tweeter better integrated, while the wood's midrange was a little laid back and the bass not as forcefull as the marble 4.0. |
| Thanks Ears... | DueN Mar 7, 2001 6:51 PM | | So... how are you setting up your system? Are they for a 6.1 setup with the piggies for front and prisms for rears? Have you tried them in HT? Which sounds better for center channel?
I know, I know. Lots of questions. but can't help it. :-)
Thanks again. |
| You got it right - 6.1 with | Ears Mar 7, 2001 9:21 PM | | 3 Piggies in the front (so I can keep an eye on the little rascals) and prisms in the back. I have to put some shelves up for the prisms before I can really try them in HT. I went with the prisms for the rears because I didnt like the looks of the 4.0 on a shelf or, heaven forbid, hanging by one of its chubby little legs! The prism does sound a bit different from the 4.0 so I don't know how well it would work as a center with 4.0s as mains. Actually, I have a AudioControl Rialto 7 channel equalizer on order so I guess I would be able to make them match if I wanted to go that way. I think it would LOOK cool with the piggies as mains and the prism in the center. Of couse they look totally different, except for both having the periscope eye on top, but I think they compliment each other really well - maybe because they are both so unusual looking? I have to say again I am SO impressed with the looks of the prisms, both the shape and the look of the wood. I got the natural teak and it so sweet. I expected to love the looks of the 4.0s but the prisms were a real surprise. Hope yours arrive soon. |
| You got it right - 6.1 with | DueN Mar 8, 2001 5:00 AM | | Please let us know after you have a chance to listen to them in a HT setup. I'm particularly interested because I'll have a similar mix of piggies/prisms for HT. I ordered a shielded prism 4.1, 2 regular 4.1 and 2 ceramic 4.0. I'm wired for 7.1 so I will get two more. Which ones to get depends on how they sound in various roles.
Thanks. |
| You may have the moniker with my compliments. | OriginalEars(formerly Ears) Mar 7, 2001 11:10 PM | | Since I rarely post here any longer, I've decided to relinquish the "Ears" moniker. |
| Wouldn't think of it | Newears Mar 8, 2001 6:57 AM | | No, I can't take anothers name. Actually my (most current) new name is EarsInTraining (formerly IgnorantEars) but I like the sound of NewEars. OriginalEars... NewEars - I like it! Hey, isn't it great to be able to change your name on a whim! How about - GuessMyName? |
| I think I'll stay with "Original Ears". | Original Ears Mar 8, 2001 12:01 PM | | Actually, I'd been thinking of modifying my "Ears" moniker anyway. "Ears" seems to be a name that people frequently choose when posting here. You can still have the moniker, but you'll have less confusion in the long run if you do go with "New Ears". |
| sounds good to my NewEars :) (nt) | NewEars Mar 8, 2001 4:25 PM | | |
| re: 4.0 marble piggies vs 4.1 prisms | Father Mar 8, 2001 6:08 AM | | On a different note .... All this talk about the little piggies ..... I have enough little piggies (5 wood, 4 marbles). Eventually I think I'm going to invest in 2 pigs ...(the marble 9.0) for a 2 channel system! A couple of large pigs will sound so nice .... Just a little humor on this pig site. OINK Father |
