|  Niles AT8500 In Walls For $860.00/pair - Should I ? | VideoP Mar 8, 2001 5:46 AM | | Help...
My AV dealer is having a closeout on Niles In Wall Speakers and is switching to the Speakercraft line; The best deal appeared to be for the AT8500 (list was $1500./pair), unopened and on sale for $860.00: These units have the following features:
- 8" aluminum cone woofer w/ cast iron frame, vented pole piece, high temp aluminum voice coil former, butyl rubber suspension
- Two 1.5" midrange w/ fluid cooled aluminum/urethane hyperbolic domes, NDFE 35 neodymium. high mag flux motor structure, distortion cancelling balanced dome
- 1" fluid cooler aluminum/urethane hyperbolic dome, NDFE 35 neodymium high mag flux motor structure, distortion canx bal drive
- Linkwitz-Riley computer optimized crossover filters w/ premium components, 4 increment bass/Mid/Treb controls (-3/0/3/6)
- 359 deg rotating, 30 degree pivoting DSFG adjustable dispersion array, 6mm low diffraction X matrix polycarb baffles;
I listened to the B&W Signature 7 SE speakers and they sounded ok, but they were 1200.00 and had no Bass/Mid/Treb controls and were only 2 way; For 340.00 less I would get 3-way with all I mentioned above. Unsure whether aluminum domes and urethane/butyl rubber are good stiff construction or not.
Not being an audiofile and never having heard these speakers (the units were in the main warehouse and not on display), I need some help from you experts. I have an Onkyo/Integra 7.1 THX certified receiver, but no rears or center channel speakers yet. Please convince me one way or the other. I have Klipsch front speakers, nothing expensive or fancy. My room is 20x20, viewing couch in the middle of the room facing a large screen Hitachi centered 10 feet along one wall; In wall units would be on the rear wall facing forward toward the screen vice side mounted.
Anyone heard these AT8500s and are they the best deal for my money ?
Thanks in advance,
Jim B. |
