| Switchable BiPole/DiPole Speakers | simplemoney Mar 9, 2001 5:48 AM | | Does anyone know of rear speakers that have a SWITCH to select Bi-pole or Di-pole mode, other than Polk.? I know Monitor makes a set that can be wired both ways, but I'm more interested in a switch for easy switching between movies and music. |

Bipole/dipole is the way low quality mass stuff attempts to get that spacious sound reserved to the seperates and quality speakers.
Look for stand mount speakers with absolutely no enclosure protrusions on the fronts, removable grills (keep them off if possible), and flush mounted drivers only. Also make certain the tweeters are dome type and not paper or plastic or having a surround (most suspended domes are very cheap) and that the mid has a rubber surrounf only on it. Make sure they didn't come from ANY chains like circuit city or they are badass mass market speakers.
Also note that crossover design is very poor on any mass market speakers. The reasonable ones will never use non-polarized electolytic (bipolar) capacitors, cheap grainy sandcast resistors, or inductors that aren't air core. Polks probably use all three of those no-nos in that line (not even the best thing they would make).
Other simualar speakers are Bose with offset, sidefiring, or backward facing drivers and Cambridge Soundworks, which do indeed have a little plastic button to switch bipole to dipole.
Good speakers will image nearly or flawlessly without any fake sounding effect of bipole/dipole stuff. I also hope you don't plan on using more or less than 2 speakers for music... |

They have a new series that are tri-pole. might be dicontinuing the old line get them real cheap.I have heard the old ones and I thought they sounded good for price. not much bass though. you do not need audiophile surrounds unless the rest of your equipment is TOP SHELF |
