| HT/music speakers | speedlever Apr 22, 2001 5:30 AM | | New to this forum, please allow me to post what is likely the most frequently asked question! I'm looking to setup my first HT/music system. Gotta get it all.. speakers, receiver, dvd/cd and TV. I've read thru the archives back to 4/1/01. Lotsa good info there! Listening/viewing room is a converted dining room. Hardwood floors, 8' textured ceiling, roughly 12x12, and far from ideal. Rear speakers will have to be positioned for each use, for instance. RE:speakers. Am not hung up on Paradigm, but they would likely be a strong contender.. as would NHT. Depending on the discount I can achieve, I'd like to spend no more than $3k on speakers. Paradigm: Studio series 80/CC/ADP/PW-2200 - list ~$3700 Studio series 60/CC/ADP/PW-2200 - list ~$3400 vs Monitor11/CC370/ADP370/PW2200 - list ~$2800 Monitor 9/CC370/ADP370/PW2200 - list ~$2600 Do I really need a PSub with these setups? I guess HT would need it most? Are the speakers too big for the room? Receiver to be determined: Denon/Yamaha/Onkyo. Denon 3801 seems overkill? How about the 2801? DVD/cd player to be determined. TV.. undecided. Saw a Sony 53"XBR. Geez! ($4k) Will likely have to cheap out here and get a 4:3 32"er to fit in existing armoire while the HDTV folks sort out that format. (meanwhile, I have cable and satellite). I would appreciate your thoughts on this setup as I ponder what to do! |

For that, I'd set aside $750 for a SVS 20-39PC. For the main speakers, look at the Swan Diva 5.1. They go for $899 a pair. For the center and surrounds, look at the Swan Diva 2.1 for $399 a pair. You will want to stay away from rear ported speakers (unfortunately this requirement rules out having the nOrh 4.0s (my personal favorite)) due to lack of space for the rear ports. Unless you are able to give them at least 6" for the rear ports. Perhaps you can get the ACI Emeralds ($325 each) and Titan II sub with the Sapphire III fronts. That should run you about $2,800.
For the receiver, the Onkyo TX-DS696 should work for you. It also should be similarly priced to the Denon AVR-3801. If not, the TX-DS595 will work. |

I did a Google search for Swan Diva... and found some descriptions of them.. but did not find any links for local dealers. Do you have a url that I can use to search for local dealers? I'd like to hear these speakers. Thanks for the Onkyo suggestions. I'll make a note of them for further research. Regarding the rear ported speakers... you mentioned needing 6" (inches). I wouldn't think that would be a problem with rears on stands. Am I missing something? |
