I am considering either 2 8 inch powerd subs, placed on next to or near my left and right speakers or just one 12 inch powered sub. would the two 8 inchers combined help get in to the low frequency area or would it be just a waist of time.

I have something analagous to two 8 inch subs next to both my speakers, but for a reason that probably does not affect most people -- directional information. My speakers only go down to 70 or 80 Hz, so the subs have to cover a portion of the frequency spectrum that one can still tell where it's coming from. If this doesn't apply, then I would recommend the 12 inch sub. Typically (not always, but typically), the bigger the driver, the lower it goes. Just make sure you get a good one.
