Is it possible to connect a 4 ohm car subwoofer to a 8 ohm receiver ? I have a pioneer vsx 409 rated at 100 watts (8 ohm). Same say it is possible, some say it is not, who's right? Also, what car subwoofer is a good investment for $100 (canadian) or less? Thanks for all your help!

They're both right and wrong, depending on the receiver.

Your receiver is rated "officially" at 8-ohm. You need to check the manual (or some authority on Pioneer receivers) whether that receiver can drive a 4-ohm load. Sometimes a receiver can drive a 4-ohm load but the manufacturer just publishes data for the 8-ohm load. In this case, you can use it to drive that car sub. You'll also need to check the power rating at 4-ohm.

If the receiver is not designed to drive a 4-ohm load, I wouldn't do it. You can try it, but you'll probably fry it.
