| What about Cerwin Vegas? | John R Apr 23, 2001 2:04 PM | | I'm working on my first HT system. I've pretty much decided on Pioneer Elite receiver, CD, and DVD and a Mitsu 55" HDTV. This system will be about 65/35 audio/video. I'm not 100% convinced of my speaker selection. Just this weekend, a friend of mine talked up his Cerwin Vegas enough that I became interested.
Currently, I am considering:
LR: JBL S312
C: JBL S-Center
S: JBL S26
Sub: JBL PB12
Now under consideration:
LR: Cerwin E-712
C: Cerwin E-76C
S: Cerwin E-706
Sub: Cerwin HT-S12
On paper, the JBLs have a better range, power capacity, and sensitivity. However, Cerwin Vega is a pretty good name.
Both sound pretty good. So which would be the best deal? Any opinions would be appreciated. |
| CV's are not really hi fi. | JasonChap Apr 23, 2001 4:08 PM | | I would look into Paradigm or NHT they will beat CV and JBL at any price point. You can get NHT SuperOnes(very good) or Paradigm mini-monitors for $350 a pair. Paradigm Titans are very good for $220. If you are looking for a floor standing speaker, try the NHT SuperTwos which can be had for $499 from crutchfield or $400 new on ebay. I have owned CV E-712s in the past and now own NHT SuperOnes and I can tell you from expereance that the NHTs win hands down. Dont know what you want to spend on your other components, but I would look at Marantz or Denon for a musical reciever. Denon makes good DVD players too, but Pioneer is one of the best when it comes to a good DVD player. As for CD players I would look at Marantz, AMC, Rotel, or Cambridge Audio. This is a good place to start looking before building a system- I wish I knew what I know now when I started building one, I would have saved alot of $$$. Don't be afraid to ask ?'s |
| re: What about Cerwin Vegas? | yeaship Apr 30, 2001 1:00 AM | | As the other person has incorrectly pointed out (hi-fi) isn't the name it is the sound that a certain person is looking for. You could buy definitive technologies top of the line speakers and have great sound, but maybe you want a different sound and maybe jbl or cv can give it to you. You have to leave all your options open to you. Cerwin-Vega's have been downcast to being boomy by a lot of (hi-fi) experts but several of their speakers are good for ht use, I personally would like to get ahold of a pair of AL-1000's for my setup but I haven't been able to find a pair and with each weighing in at close to 100 lbs a piece I don't plan on paying shipping either. But back to the point. You need to go find a good audio store and listen to several different brands of speakers on different types of media (dvd, cd, vhs if possible) and see what speakers suit you best. Don't just read the articles, experience the sensations of the real thing before you sink your cash and realize those cv's or nht or paradigm or jbl speakers aren't really what I wanted. While the specs may look good your receiver is only putting out 150-175 watts max at 8 ohms (not familiar with pioneer ex receiver specs). SO it doesn't really matter how much power they will output because the 712 can swallow 150-250 watts and suck down more, as could the jbls. The point is, buy what you want to buy, don't buy on a name or based off a spec sheet, go listen and to coin the phrase "try before you buy" that's my .02 for the day, night all, |
