| Bookshelf speaker HELP!!!! please!! | Martin Apr 24, 2001 7:53 AM | | I live in a small "L" shaped studio apartment (~450 s.f.).
Listening position however, is about 9' away from (PSB) speakers up against the wall.
My current system is as follows:
Adcom (solid state) 545 Power Amp
NAD (intergarated) pre-amp (section)
Rega Planar 2 turntable
NAD tape deck
NAD CD player
PSB 500i speakers (got to go!)
On steel standesign 5t component rack unit
I have no cabling to speak of.
Listen mostly to Jazz ("neo"-bop)CD's and LP's, pop CD's
and Reggae LP's (i know..this doesn't simplify anything).
I find the 500i's to be to "boomy" and muffled,
The imaging is also quite poor.
I have auditioned B&W 601's, B&W 602's, NHT SuperOnes,
Paradigm MiniMonitors and Boston Acousics VR-M5's.
Have yet to hear the Triagle Titus xs.
To date the Boston Acoustics are the leader of the pack (though not a bargain).
The BA's pack wonderful sound and imaging in such a small package. I don't need ton's of bass, but I don't want it ignored either. 50hz-22khz SHOULD suffice.
If I just listened to Pop and reggae I would go with th paradigm's, but they are potentially overpowering, anyway.
Is there a bookshelf speaker that is designed (or performs adequately)
ON A BOOKSHELF (as opposed to stands away from wall)?
Thanks
Martin

| re: Bookshelf speaker HELP!!!! please!! | jtk Apr 24, 2001 9:11 PM | | Martin,
I recently purchased a pair of CSW Newton M80 bookshelf speakers for $450. They are sitting horizontally, on a shelf, and sound just fine. Imaging is very good. Spec'ed frequency response is 40hz-22khz, and while I have not measured it, it seems very adequate. They seemed a bit harsh right out of the box, but have mellowed nicely. Vocals are wonderful, instruments all seem very good. I have listened to a broad range of music and they do not seem to favour any specific genre. Even at volumes intended not to wake the wife and kids, I can hear subtle details, and this from a Technics EX-140. With better equipment driving them, they should be better. The finish is also quite nice.
A friend has the B&W 602, with some very nice equipment driving it and they are a pleasure to listen to as well, even though the setup is not optimal, they are on the floor.
Another friend just auditioned the latest JMLabs bookshelf (can't remember the name) and thinks they are the most musical speaker he has heard in this range (about $400).
Just my 2cents.
Regards,
John |
