| Bookshelf speaker HELP!!!! please!! | Martin Apr 24, 2001 7:54 AM | | I live in a small "L" shaped studio apartment (~450 s.f.).
Listening position however, is about 9' away from (PSB) speakers up against the wall.
My current system is as follows:
Adcom (solid state) 545 Power Amp
NAD (intergarated) pre-amp (section)
Rega Planar 2 turntable
NAD tape deck
NAD CD player
PSB 500i speakers (got to go!)
On steel standesign 5t component rack unit
I have no cabling to speak of.
Listen mostly to Jazz ("neo"-bop)CD's and LP's, pop CD's
and Reggae LP's (i know..this doesn't simplify anything).
I find the 500i's to be to "boomy" and muffled,
The imaging is also quite poor.
I have auditioned B&W 601's, B&W 602's, NHT SuperOnes,
Paradigm MiniMonitors and Boston Acousics VR-M5's.
Have yet to hear the Triagle Titus xs.
To date the Boston Acoustics are the leader of the pack (though not a bargain).
The BA's pack wonderful sound and imaging in such a small package. I don't need ton's of bass, but I don't want it ignored either. 50hz-22khz SHOULD suffice.
If I just listened to Pop and reggae I would go with th paradigm's, but they are potentially overpowering, anyway.
Is there a bookshelf speaker that is designed (or performs adequately)
ON A BOOKSHELF (as opposed to stands away from wall)?
Thanks
Martin

| re: Bookshelf speaker HELP!!!! please!! | E. Tucker Apr 24, 2001 11:09 AM | | You might consider a pair of CBM-170 from Ascend Acoustics. These speakers are getting wonderful reviews from music listeners and the price is right. http://www.ascendacoustics.com |
| re: Bookshelf speaker HELP!!!! please!! | Gurduloo Apr 24, 2001 12:44 PM | | The CBM-170 are rear ported and therefore probably shouldn't be placed against a wall. What you really want is a bookshelf speaker with front ports or no ports at all. The KEF Q15.2 meets these criteria and can be had for $320 a pair at http:\\www.cyberteria.com . Good luck. |
| re: Bookshelf speaker HELP!!!! please!! | vdogg Apr 24, 2001 4:10 PM | | I own Paradigm Mini MOnitors and in the way I have them set up (not too close to the rear wall), they sound excellent and I chose them over the Superones. BUT, in your case, you do NOT want a rear ported speaker. The Superones might be right up your alley. Check them out, they are very good also for the money

| I second the VR-M50s.... | Don H. Apr 24, 2001 7:10 PM | | I have had the 50s for about four months and like them more every day. The only problem I have with them is that they do sound a bit constraned when pushed but at medium levels they are outstanding. Very smooth and cohesive. The British Mag. "What Hi-Fi?" compared the M50s to speakers close to twice their price (B&W CDM-1NT, Monitor Audio Silver 8i, Mission 782) and the Bostons held their ground recieving four out of five stars (I think they lost a star because of the plasic on the face of the speaker and the fact that they are "Yankee" speakers) but had nothing but good things to say about their sound. Please e-mail me with any questions!! |
| Oh, by the way.... | Don H. Apr 24, 2001 7:17 PM | | I'm using the following equipment: NAD C340 integrated NAD C520 transport MSB Link III DAC Monarchy DIP Boston PV-600 sub Audioquest Slate Speaker Cables Straight Wire Encore II ic's Straight Wire Mega Link digital coax I think your system is around the same ballpark as mine as far as tonal balance so the Bostons should work well for you. Good Luck!! |
