They won't do better than 15% off listhyfy61

I am trying to bargain for a pair of dynaudio audience 82's. There is only one dealer in at least 100 miles and of course shipping would offset any bargain. What they have offered is to get me a pair of B-stock used at a show for three days for about 22% off list. If there is no other dealer in the area they can get away with screwing us over.

Sounds like your dealer is making a fair offer. 15% off isn't bad considering they have no competition within 100 miles. I was very happy to get 20% off my Paradigms, but they were having their annual sale where I bought them. I could never have gotten that big a discount if I just walked in and made an offer on a single pair of speakers.

Apparently they are selling models that have been replaced with newer and better ones for the same price. The audience 80 is lesser of a speaker than an 82 and as it is obsolete should not be sold for the same as the newer ones.

I find it pretty darn lucky to even get 15% off list on new Danes. Out of 3 Dynaudio dealers the most I've seen any of them budge off a new MSRP price is 10%.. basically they know that even at the MSRP you're getting much more bang for the buck than similarly priced speakers elsewhere in the stores (at least the ones I've been to), so they won't go down much. Demo models are different, however, and I managed to save my parents and roommate a little over 25% MSRP on Audience 8's and Contour 1.1 demo models (try calling the dealer in Tulsa, Oklahoma and say "Alan Sull, a former customer directed me here for Danes"). The Audience 8's were in fab condition, but the 1.1's had a scratch and couple dents in one tweeter cover (that pissed my roommate off but he still loves the speaker and price he paid for it).

Why should there be between 40%-50% markup on any item. Why isn't 15-25% enough profit? This is whats wrong with this whole greedy world. The same dealer offered me 28% off list on a pair of Mirage OM5's cause they are not going to sell them anymore. They don't want to compete with Tweeter. They only want to sell stuff where they have no competition.
I am happy to get the deal I am going to get. Demos are already somewhat broken in.

In this 40 to 50% mark up light bills, insurance, loans, employers pay, social security matching, the list goes on.Now in return you have a place where you can sample the wares of many manufactures. You Should get good honest advice in these places.(notice the word should).People pay 50% mark up all the time they just dont know it.

Almost every dealer out there has huge markup. Dynaudio dealers included.. after all the things DO go through a lot of middlemen (they're from Denmark!).

In any kind of purchase, you have to have a sense of what the market value is. Danes have a high resale value, and are very competitive within the Audience/Contour price ranges even at MSRP (I haven't heard Confidence or above). My "Hyfy" is fooling himself if he honestly thinks he can get 1/2 price off on a brand new pair of Audience 82's directly from a dealer. The dealers actually pay a little over 1/2 the speaker price to begin with (this varies among manufacturers but in particular my Dyn dealer paid about 60% MSRP).

If you don't want to pay the price, then I suggest going for a mail order company and avoiding all the middlemen. But in the process you're denying yourself a pretty darn good speaker. It's just a matter of whether you can afford it or not, and how much it is worth personally to you.

I guess it's better than the auto game where everybody gets ripped off no matter what price they get.

If I were you I'd jump at the show specials and say thank you.

You see where this is going, don't you? Pretty soon, the "good stuff" will only be available in B & M stores and the "other stuff" will be available over the net and the hiway stores. Mickey Dees and BKs are all over but to geta good burgrr, you gotta go to a real food place.

Don't think you are dealing with CC or BB here. He can't afford to cultivate your type of business and expect to stay alive. He's probably got steady customers that don't mind paying a fair dollar for a good product. They realize he's got to pay the bills involved with running a B & M operation.

He gave you a pretty fair quote considering it was over the phone and you've never dealt with him before. Remember, he doesn't know you from Adam (the bibical one) and you probably won't buy from him again. You'll just surf the net for a price on somethinbg and try to force him to meet the price. You don't think he knows that?

First of all I don't expect to get 50% off. I was trying to get 22% off so with tax I would stay within my $2000.00 budget. I figured they would make 25% over thier price. A fair profit for doing nothing since these speakers sell themselves.
Secondly, it wasn't just an over the phone quote. I bought my 1st system in 1978 with my very first income tax check from this store and have been a loyal customer since with the exeption of a Sound Valves tubed pre-amp. I just recently replaced the Infinitys I got in 78 and am now replacing the Mirages I got 6 years ago. I also bought a Hafler pre-tuner and amp.
What bothers me is they only want to sell brands that have no local competition so they don't have to budge.
I am going to get the show demos for sure.
If they were going to give me 28% off on a pair of Mirage OM5s cause they don't want to sell them anymore, I thought they could do 22% off of the Dynos.
Don't get me wrong. Everybody should make a fair profit but not a killing. The salesmen do drive Mercedes.

This is the way a free market works. A seller has every right to ask any price he wants. A buyer has every right to accept the price or walk away. After all, we are talking speakers here, not food during a famine or water during a drought. Find your best deal and either accept it or reject it and keep shopping.

Isn't it funny how people who make too much money would rather make no money than some money? They would rather you went to Tweeter than cut into thier margin a little bit. How sad. Anyway I am getting show demo B-stock from same dealer for close to 25% off. Heh! They are almost broken in.
