I am looking at getting into home theatre, I have a budget of around $3500 for 5 speakers. Brands that I have looked into include Paradigm Reference, B&W CDM NT, Monitor Audio Silver, and Klipsch Reference line. I will probably be using a Marantz SR-8000 Receiver to power the speakers. Any suggestions on which speakers would match the Marantz well would be appreciated. I would look at other brands than the ones I listed, they are just their as a starting point. Thanks

Look at nOrh, Dunlavy, and Dynaudio - all are extremely good.

I use an SR 8000 with a pair of Paradigm Reference 40's/Reference center/Atoms as surrounds, and am really happy with the sound. The whole set-up (including HSU VTR-2 sub) cost less than 2,000. I find the Paradigm/Marantz combination is really good sounding. With your budget, you could step up to Ref 100's V2, Mini Monitor surrounds, and a killer SVS Sub.

Unlike other reviewers, I do not find the Paradigm Reference series overly bright (after sufficient break-in and with good wires). They have aluminum tweeters and are really solid. Many good high end companies use metal tweeters (B&W, Meridian, etc.). Plus, they have a great 5 year warranty and look really good. Mine have light cherry side panels. Let us know what you wind up getting.

I agree with Bob and Jackster. Check out those Paradigm Reference 100 v2, with the Reference center, but for surrounds I would go with the Reference ADP (Adapted Dipolar). This would give you a completely timbre matched system.

For the Def Techs, I would check out the 4 2006TL and a C 2300. The 2006 are bipolar. They make excellent fronts and surrounds, plus they have a 250 watt built in sub. The center also has a built in sub backed by 150 watts of power. This is one of the best centers that I have heard and this is important for HT. This setup would give you 1150 watts of HT power!

I have the Marantz SR-7000, and I feel that it matches my B&W's very well. I have the 602s2, but I'm planning to upgrade to the CDM NT series eventually. I think that for $3500, you could get a very nice set of speakers:

Mains: CDM 7NT ($2000)
Center: CDM CNT ($600)
Surround: CDM 1NT ($1200)

Total $3800, and you could probably get a discount if buying the whole package at once. Depending on the dealer, and the deal you can cut, you might even be able to swing the 9NT over the 7's for not much more. Marantz is a very nice match for B&W's because Marantz has slightly warm sound amps, and B&W has slightly bright sound speakers. They match up perfectly (IMO) to create a nice neutral sound that does not fatigue the ears. Also, to me, no other speaker provides the clarity and detail that B&W's are capable of (at least none of the speakers I've heard).

Let us know your decision and results.

agree, but I think you could save some $$ and get 601s for the rears, thats what I did, they are still very good.

I have the SR7000 as well and am running a full B&W setup. As the previous poster indicated, I find them to be a great match. I also use 601s as surrounds with 603s for the mains.

Five Sapphire III LEs will set you back about $3000. They are most often very favorably compared to the much more expensive B&W 805s. One of the finest speaker values around. Period. Check them out, you will be glad you did!

Check out Energy speakers - specifically the Veritas line, I really enjoy mine. 3.5k will get you a great setup, just take the time to audition as many as you can.

I have Mordaunt-Short 906 towers, which I love, mated with a Yamaha RX-V390, which should be replaced soon by a Marantz SR-7000. I've heard that the warm sounding Marantz compliments these (slightly bright) speakers perfectly. Besides, Marantz is the US distributor for Mordaunt-Short.

Whether you want bookshelf or floor speakers, size of room and subwoofer plans (if any)

Most likely I would get floorstanding speakers for the mains, and bookshelf size for the rears. I am not planning to get a subwoofer right away as I figure floorstanding mains should provide plenty of bass for a while.

Save your money. Get a Marantz SR 7000 and an ODL amplifier for the front two channels. You can get this set-up for less than an SR 8000 and it will blow away anything Marantz makes. The ODL amp is a version of the Odyssey Stratos and is unbelievable. They are available from ODLav.com for a 595 as a close-out due to a lawsuit over intelectual property with Odyssey. You can get the Marantz for 625, making your total around 1300. No $1,300 receiver will come within a mile of this one. The ODL is a 52lb. powerhouse. You can't go wrong with this system.

Also, it will power anything. My choice is Paradigm however I have a friend who uses it with Magnepan 1.6r's and is in love with the sound.
