| Best MUSIC sub for <$250... Sony SA-WM40? | BryanD Jun 4, 2001 9:55 AM | | I am looking for the best music sub for around $250 or preferably less. Is the Sony SA-WM40 good for music or is it just a wall-shaking movie sub? Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks! |

You can find a Klipsch KSW10 for $249 online.
Another couple options are hometheaterdirect.com, the Level 2 sub is not bad bang for the buck @ $179. BIC makes a better-than-most-in-that-price 10 incher, for under $200. AR 112 can be had in that price too.
You could build a real nice passive, very musical for under $250, give it a thought.
Sorry, I really don't like the Sony, some do. I think your best bet is to remain passive, and DIY...for music only.
Cheers,

| re: Best MUSIC sub for <$250... Sony SA-WM40? | paulbl Jun 4, 2001 10:38 AM | | For music, I don't think any sub for 250 or less is that great (I could be wrong, though). The DIY option is pretty good, you could build your own and if done correctly, would blow away anthing on the market at that price point. |
| Good DIY site for this? | BryanD Jun 4, 2001 12:35 PM | | Anyone direct me to a good site for DIY subs for this price/purpose? thanks! |
| Good DIY site for this? | Brian Bunge Jun 4, 2001 1:28 PM | | Bryan, If you can spend just over $300 you could buy ACI's SV12 driver with their PSA1 plate amp and build you're own sub! Or you can get the driver alone for $149. I have two of each and absolutely love them. The driver comes with a subwoofer builder's manual that answers a lot of questions about different designs and alignments. Also, there are suggested alignments included with the driver, which are also available on the ACI website. Here's a link for ya: http://www.audioc.com/subs/ACI_drivers/SV12.htm Brian Bunge |

| Good DIY site for this? | paulbl Jun 4, 2001 1:30 PM | | Check out www.adireaudio.com their Shiva driver is very well respected among DIY'ers, and if you contact them, they will help you out with cabinet dimensions, port length/area, etc. The Shiva works well in sealed (tight, clean, detailed, also goes deep for HT), or ported (very deep bass, needs less power) enclosures. |

Just my opinion, but if your budget is $250 or less, I would not waste time on trying to get a GOOD plate amp and a GOOD driver. Go passive, and get a GREAT driver, esp for music only.
Check out HI-VI, Morel, Scanspeak, and Focal.

| Passive? Active? difference? | BryanD Jun 4, 2001 7:30 PM | | So, newbie question: What's the difference between a passive and (I assume) active sub? |
| Passive? Active? difference? | PJ Jun 5, 2001 1:40 AM | | Passive sub is driven by an external amp (ie SVS CS subs), whilst an active has an amp on board (ie SVS PC subs). |
| Passive? Active? difference? | BryanD Jun 5, 2001 9:53 AM | | ok, so it's bassically "amplified sub" vs."get your own amp sub" |
