| Yamaha YST-SW800 10" subwoofer whoops a$$ | Blue Bird Jun 4, 2001 5:48 PM | | I just bought a mint Yamaha YST SW800 off my friend for $300.
He upgraded to a new Velodyne CT-100 for $650 canadian.
Well let me tell you a few things about my new yamaha sub.
#1 - 1000 watt amp ( 1000 watts RMS i think )
#2 - 1 inch thick MDF cabinet
#3 - 4" long stroke voice coil ( WOW 4 inches!!!! )
#4 - 2" exsursion ( the velo hgs series also has 2" exscursion )
#5 - Servo technology ( also found on the hgs series )
#6 - i only paid $300 canadian
#7 - Rubber surrounds & double spiders
#8 - It's abbility to do 25hz slam at high SPL
#9 - High SPL's due to its 4" voice coil and 2" exscursion
#10 - size
#11 - poplypopalyne driver ( i think )
#12 - The bass is rich solid deep clean loud bass down to about 20 to 25hz
#13 - good build quality
-------------------------------------------------------------
For some strange reason my friend & me compared both subs and the Yamaha had a cleaner sound & played louder for home theater and the yammy will kill the velo for music too.
Currently he now owns a Velodyne CT-120.
So dont put this sub down. |

| Sounds too good to be true!!! | Ratso Jun 4, 2001 8:35 PM | | Anyone else have experience with this sub? How is the sound on music & HT? Build quality? Boom? Distortion? Any info would be appreciated. |
| Well... | paulbl Jun 5, 2001 10:29 AM | | For 300 Blue Bird paid for the sub, it seems like a good deal. The crutchfield web site also states that its 1000 watts, but DOES NOT say that its 1000 watts RMS. My guess is that to get anywhere near the claimed low-frequency extention, it probably uses heavy boost (equalization), which is very power consuming. It also retails for 799, which in my opinion is way too much. My experience with Yamaha subs is that they are not that great for the $. I upgraded my yamaha YST150 to an Adire Audio Rava sub, and the Rava is in a totally different league than the Yammie. There is simply no comparison between the two, the Rava is that much better, and is only 100 more than the Yammie. Admittedly, the YST800 is different than my old yammie, so maybe it's as good as it seems, but based on my experience with Yamaha subs, it probably isn't (IMO). Having said that, for 300 bones, it's probably a great deal, however, for 799, you can do WAY better. You could get an ACI Titan, a pair of the aforementioned Rava's, or an SVS setup. If I had 799 to spend on a sub, I wouldn't even consider the YST800, for 300, I would. |
| Well... | FYI Jun 5, 2001 3:43 PM | | I think the yammie sub is similar to the new SPL series from Velodyne. Same sealed, high power, high excursion designs. About the same price as well. If is is anything like the SPL like it appears .... have fun! |
