Question about Cerwin Vega SpeakersJ Rock
Jun 4, 2001 7:45 PM
I am a novice in home audio and am buying my first home theater/stereo system. My question is about a pair of Cerwin Vega Speakers I am considering. I am buying a Yamaha 5280 Reciever and was wondering whether it can power Cerwin Vega LS-15 Tower speakers. These speakers take 400 watts rms and want to know if I give it 100 watts from the yamaha, will sound ok even at high volumes. If I need more power, I was also wondering if I could hook up both the A and B speaker outputs into the Cerwin's so that it would get 200 watts each. However the Cerwin's are not bi-amp capable, so if I hook up the A and B pair to it I would have to solder the A and B speaker wires together at one end, and then plug it into the Cerwin's. If anyone can tell me if this idea is ok , or if 100 watts is ok , or any other advise to what I should do, I would greatly appreciate it.

CV speakers are generally effecient speakers. A 100W reciever should have no trouble powering them to very loud volumes. You can't hook up a single pair of speakers to your reciever using both the A and B outputs. The A/B pair is meant for driving 2 different pairs of speakers. When you turn them both on they are both powered by the same amplifers in parallel - it doesn't make your reciever twice as powerful.

Also I should point out that although Cerwin Vega speakers are good for loud volumes (party speakers) they are not usually considered "audiophile" quality speakers. There are other options out there that you should listen to in your price range - Paradigm, B&W, Energy... and possibly mail order speakers like ACI, EdgeAudio, and the obligatory nOrh.

Thanx for the advice on the CV's. I also agree with you on looking at paradigm, B&W, and Energy, however, I am getting brand new CV
LS-15's for $350 a pair, not each, but for a pair. So if you can recommend any good tower speaker for around $350, then I will go and buy that, but right now I can't find any. If I was paying regular price for these $700, then I would have definately bought either polk's, Ar's or any of the other speakers you suggested. If you know anywhere or anyone I could get a pair of nice audiophile speakers from for about $400, it would be a great help, but I think this request is a long shot. I know down the road I will definately upgrade to audiophile speakers, and a nice sub, but right now I just don't have alot of money.

Try the NHT SuperTwo's. They have the same 1" soft dome tweeter and 6.5" mid/woofer found on the criticly acclaimed SuperOne bookshelf with a 6.5" down fireing Subwoofer. They retail for $750 but have recently been discontinued and replaced along with the rest of the "Super" series (which are all very well thought of), so you can get them for $400-$500 now. They have solid bass response to 35Hz so you can go without a sub if you are short on money. I prefer a full range speaker without a powered sub for music anyway. These will blow away the CV's or anything else you get for the money. Read some reviews on the SuperTwo's and their bookshelf sibbling the SuperOne.

If you're willing to search for used bookshelf speakers there are a lot of excellent choices in the $400 range. Check on this site, or at Audiogon.com. At Audiogon there is currently listed Dynaudio Audience 40 for $400 - I own and use a pair myself, these are fantastic speakers, get them if you possibly can. Also Monitor Audio Silver 3i's, or NHT SuperOne's would be good choices.

I wouldn't shy away from getting bookshelf speakers rather than towers. They may have less bass impact but the overall sound will be smoother, clearer, and detailed.

You will also want a sub either way. My impression of the CVs is that they tend to be boomy. Party type speakers is an excellent description. They are a step above KLH, but not even in the same vicinity as Def Tech, Klipsch, Paradigm, or B&W.
