what exactly does a subwoofer do? more importantly i got some crappy ass 6.5 speakers for my car becuase the 6.9's wouldn't fit, anyhow they have absolutely no bass.....so maybe i should ask what exactly could i do or add to achieve some kind of bass sound? subwoofer? amp? i really have no idea.
any help is appreciated.

Depends on how much bass you really want. A modest amp (30wpc or so) with good 6.5's in a car will give decent bass, but they won't slam you in the gut or anything like that, for that kind of bass you need a sub, which is designed specifically to produce low frequencies (below 80hz or so). In a car, subs give tremendous output because a cars interior area is quite small compared to a home, thus the sub only has to fill a small area with bass, which is a lot easier to do than fill a large area. Also the wavelength of a low frequency note (below 35hz or so) is longer than the interior of a car, which helps to boost low frequencies. If you are interested in a car sub, I've had good results with sealed subs (10" or so) in small enclosures (around 1 cubic ft.). Something like that will give a nice low bass sound and plenty of output, but won't sound too boomy. Also you don't have to give up too much interior (or trunk) space for a huge sub enclosure.

the speakers as it is have generally no bass, when i put the bass up it just makes that annoying sound.....adding an amp will give some bass sound? and yes matthew i don't want to the whole block hearing my bass LOL i just want to be able to hear it. the 6.5's are sony xplod. what amp do you think will work well with these.......low budget....so uhh take that into account. thanks again

p.s. argo....real nice.....

You could spend around 150-200 bucks or so and get a decent 25-35wpc amp which should really clean up the sound and give stronger, 'punchier' bass compared to using the amp inside your head unit. Don't get a too powerful amp, you might end up hearing a lot of 'bottoming' from your speakers.

Radio Shack used to have something for car speakers that covers the back of the speaker to improve bass response. They were made out of a foam material. It almost acts like a gasket to prevent sound from leaking from where the speaker is mounted.

If you do go for a sub, make sure you get one that musically meets your needs while not disturbing other drivers. There's nothing more annoying than waiting at a traffic light at a busy intersection when you discover that the 5.3 earthquake you were experiencing was sourced at someone approaching you with their kicker box blaring.

"while not disturbing other drivers" - If the bass coming from another car "disturbs" you, well, you probably shouldn't be on the road. Maybe you should worry about your own driving and not other driver's bass...Just a thought.
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people asking...ntagro1
