Power line conditioner questionHan

This may sound stupid, but...
What is the significance of the "joules" number and how does it relate (if at all) to power consumption of components?

Like, does it matter if you plug in an amplifier that consumes 1000-1500 watts? Do these surge protectors / conditioners hurt or harm stuff that consume lots of power? They don't seem to specify anything about handling big amps, so I wasn't sure if it mattered or not.

Sorry to clarify, I meant hurt or harm performance, not damage the equipment.
