| About to commit to B&W's N804. Please comment. | dazed Jun 5, 2001 3:48 PM | | I listened to the N804s yesterday and I was swept off my feet. I went to the store wanting to buy the less expenseve 604s but the sales rep made me listen to the N804s and now I need to spend the additional dough. Can't stop thinking about how great they sounded but I didn't hear enough bass though -- could it be just the set-up?. N804 owners please comment on this. Also, would you have rather paid the the extra $$ for the N803s? |

| re: About to commit to B&W's N804. Please comment. | johnrd Jun 5, 2001 11:36 PM | | I have owned the N804s for about 3 months now and am very, very pleased with the bass reproduction. It is tight, quick and goes low enough for my tastes. Previously I owned the CDM 7NTs and the 804s are a major improvement in the bass area. Of course, placing them closer to the rear wall will increase the bass so placement may help with your concerns. You should read David Dowdell's excellent review of these speakers in the Nov. or Dec. issue of Soundstage.com. Personally, I listen to a lot of acoustic and jazz music where bass is not the primary emphasis. I prefer the bass to be just another element of the music and tire very quickly of speakers where the bass dominates the rest of the music. That type of speaker is exciting at first, but wears me out after awhile. The 804s faithfully reproduce the bass in the recording, but do not do so at the expense of the rest of the instruments. From what I have heard, the upgrade to the 803s would not be worth the extra cost. I have a rather large listening area and the 804s fill it quite nicely. One other thing, if you listen primarily to rock or rap there are probably better speakers you should consider. I hope this helps and good luck. John |

Please comment. | rodney Jun 5, 2001 11:48 PM | | dang, "a major improvement in the bass area" now I feel really jealous, actually my CDM7s do a great job in all other areas, but the bass is lacking a bit (especially on ghetto rap), good thing I have 2 very good/musical subs |
| re: About to commit to B&W's N804. Please comment. | Waltco Jun 6, 2001 12:11 AM | | Welcome to the world of B&W. Have used my 804s as fronts in my HT setup(2500 cu.ft. room) for 1 year and no regrets. I use 805s in the back, a HTM2 in the center and an ASW2500 as my sub. Save your money on the 803s and spend it on a good subwoofer. Be sure you have a really good power amp with plenty of reserve to make them sing. A Rotel 1090 is a good match for stereo and bass will not be a problem. |
| how much power would u recommend for N804's? thanks~ | Cross Jun 6, 2001 4:28 AM | | nt |
| Power Amp for B&Ws N804 | dazed Jun 6, 2001 9:11 AM | | Thanks for all of your comments -- it's pretty reassuring considering the investment I'm going to make on these speakrs. Also, thanks to Waltco for suggesting a power amp that matches the N804s for stereo listening. Anyone have other experience or suggestions with what kind of power amp to use? |
| Rotel........ | BK Jun 6, 2001 9:48 AM | | and B&W are owned by the same company. Thus a Rotel/B&W combo is a true match. I own CDM's powered by the Rotel RMB-1095 5 channel amp, and can tell you this combination is excellent! Go with a Rotel amp, you'll love it. Good luck |
| NOPE..... | rodney Jun 6, 2001 11:36 PM | | I recently posted that information on another site, and apparently it is wrong. As I understood it before, B&W and rotel (as well as Classe) are all distributed by the same parent company. b&w and rotel aren't the same company, but apperently there are some ties. |
| Yes........ | BK Jun 7, 2001 5:29 AM | | actually Rod, the contact for B&W and Rotel is the same. I have contacted both, and it is the same number. Both headquarters are in Reading Mass., exact same address, and phone number. Incidentally I live about 20 minutes from their headquarters. |
| No | johnrd Jun 7, 2001 10:01 AM | | B&W and Rotel are definitely not owned by the same company. They are distributed here in the US by the same company. At least that is what the people at B&W told me over the phone. Then again, maybe B&W doesn't know. |
| Power Amp for B&Ws N804 | johnrd Jun 6, 2001 9:58 AM | | You might want to take a look at the N804 reviews here on audioreview.com to see what others are using. Personally, I use an Anthem MCA3 (3 channels at 170 watts/ch) power amp, together with a Yamaha 995 for the preamp. Works great. John |
