Sub - Size/Price/Sound ConnectionNickG

I purchased the smallest Cambridge Soundworks sub (BassCube 8 50 watts) a few weeks ago on while on sale ($180). It is used in a small room (12.5 x 13.5) and it sounds fine to me for HT. I have narrowed my seach for mains to small bookshelves, most likely Boston Acoustics CR75s, Paradigm Mini Monitors or a remote possiblity, the Studio 20s. For good music listening, will a "better" sub be of benefit? The Paradigm guy says to get a better sub (I beleive he is sincere, since when we discussed the Studio 20, unlike the first Paradigm dealer, this one says that one would have to be crazy to spend $300 extra for the glued on wood models) and the Boston Acoustic guy (at a Tweeter store) says the sub I have is fine for music. I am trying to keep the sub cost ~$350 or less. Recomendations or comments?

Regards, Nick

PS Yeah yeah, I know I could buy the Ascend Package with sub :). I am still having a hard time getting past buying something I have not been able to audition, which I guess maybe foolish considering the Ascend return policy. Dunno.

A better sub will get you more volume, depth, and impact. For music, it is gonna depend on the overall Q of the sub. A low Q design puts out tighter bass (.5 is considered perfect transient response), while a higher Q is looser bass, but sounds louder. If you current sub is already "tight" on the bass, then you may be better off getting something like a Behringer Feedback Destroyer instead to reduce room induced bass peaks. This will create a much smoother bass response at your listening position, and really lessen the ammount of "boominess" that low frequency energy induces in most rooms.
