| Speaker set-up and room acoustics question | kram Jul 22, 2001 11:11 AM | | Are there any specific advantages/disadvantages to setting up a room diagnally versus lengthwise? We just moved around our family room, and set up the entertainment center in one corner (forming an equaliteral triangle). The sub is behind the entertainment center with the driver facing directly at the corner, and the speakers point diagnally across the room.
It sounds like...fantastic, but I haven't measured tones. I'm almost afraid to because a bad measurement might spoil my day.
Just wondering "theoretically" what the impact should be of diagnal set-up.
BTW - the surrounds are near the other corners, angled to point just behind the "sweet spot". |

One advantage might be the fact that your tweeters are not aimed along (or parallel to) the side walls. This could give you more even treble response due to less reflection off the side walls. If I understand your setup, it may result in the speakers being at difference distances from corners. That could help even out bass response. It seems your arrangement might result in a toe-in of the tweeters, which I find usually helps smooth and spread the ideal listening area. As for drawbacks, I'd be concerned about balance between L/R. Don't be afraid to adjust your balance control if you determine a difference in channel response. |
