| Best bookshelf fronts and matching center for around $600? | Wondering Jul 22, 2001 6:45 PM | | I will be getting a $600 tax refund and want to do my part to stimulate the economy, so I've decided to buy some new speakers. I've got space constraints, so bookshelf models are a must. I also have a 12in. powered sub and a 125W receiver. I currently have the JBL N24s and N-center, which are fine for movies but really show their weaknesses when playing CDs and DVD concerts. I'll keep two N24s to serve as surrounds, so I only need the front three speakers. I want something that will make music fun to listen to again. Help!!!
I know $600 isn't a lot of money, but I'd like like to stay in that range, give or take $100. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

cheers

| Lots of Choices | NickG Jul 23, 2001 7:39 AM | | I also have been looking at speakers in your price range and there are a hugh number to choose from and it really depends of what sounds good to you. Some of speakers to consider are NHT Super Ones, Paradigm Mini Monitors, Boston Acoustic CR 75B, Polk RT35i and I dont know model numbers of these but speakers from Ascend Acoustics, Klipsch, Mirage, B&W amoung others. Ascend Acoustics are mail order only, but have gotten rave reviews. I have listened to most of the above (except Ascend and B&W) and I like the Boston Acoustic CR75B and the Paradigm Mini Monitor the best so far. So, go out and audition as many as possible and find out what YOU like.

In fact, I'd say there's no way you could convince me. It's not even close. The JBLs are probably louder, but besides that, they've got nothing on the Axioms. Or NHT SuperOnes or Paradigm MMs or PSB, etc. (all can be had for around $280-$300 quite easily.. Crutchfield was selling SuperOnes for $260 shipped a month ago). once again, check http://www.goodsound.com/original |

And as far as JBL, maybe generally speaking you are right, but I bet you have never heard the S38s in the right environment. Tout the Axioms all you want, they may be great, but don't assume something about the JBL S38 you know nothing about. |

retail at 300 dollars a pair and with the matching center you
are under 600. |
