| Using car sepakers for Home Theater? | John Grover Jul 23, 2001 7:53 AM | | My friend is thinking about bringing his Criterions out of retirement after a 5-year hiatus. I think they're about 25 years old and pretty far past thier prime. His idea is to take some car speakers (stop laughing!) and mount them inside the box. A Rockford Fosgate 12' sub and Cerwin Vega 6x9 for the mids and higs. Any idea on how to wire this up? |

Usually car speakers are 4 Ohms, and home receivers have 8 Ohm output impedance, which means the speakers can damage the output stage of your amplifier. Never mind the sub, it makes things even more complicated: you need a good car amp, and high power 110V AC / 12V DC power supply; set the car amp to Bridged mode, turn the low pass filter On (for example, 80 Hz), and connect its input to the receiver's Subwoofer output (LFE) - if it has one.
I don't know, this whole idea just doesn't sound like a healthy HT solution. |
| I don't think its a good idea either.. but... | John Grover Jul 23, 2001 12:48 PM | | Well hes got no use for the speakers, hes got Vegas for his floor speakers and his new car came with infintys so hes playing a little Dr. Jekyl for fun. Is it really going to be worth the effort? And is there any danger of fire? |
