hi. It's really a matter of preference in regards to localized effects, or dispersed/diffuse effects. Some movie soundtracks are mastered using direct radiating speakers while other masters are created with dipole or bipole surrounds. THX certifies the dipole school. Most movies are encoded with specific audio info to be directed to specific speakers, which engages the whole 5 channel soundstage. When you use the dipole or bipole design, you are taking away some of the localization of some of the effects, which in my opinion alter the original more than they should, pending of course the original was mastered using direct0-radiating. Confusing? good. Really the bottom line is do you want to have a very immersed, diffuse rear soundstage, or a localized pinpoint effect? Also to consider is that bipole or dipole technology involves more components, i.e. higher cost. good luck!

If by "standard speakers" you mean monopole point source speakers, then standard speakers are the speakers of choice. Di/bipoles or other speakers with a high percentage of reflected sound are not correct for DD.

Expect that magazines, reviewers, etc. to not be explicit about this because they do not want to hurt the di/bipole speaker makers.
