Advent Heritage keeps blowing woofers,Help!R
Jul 23, 2001 3:14 PM
Hi,I have a pair of Heritage that are 7 years old, bought new.My reciever is a Sony STR-DE945.I have the reciever set to 4 ohms and the speakers are 6 ohm.I was told by a electrician friend that 8 ohms would work the reciever less.It gets very hot at volume levels higher than 9o clock on the dial.I have lost 2 woofers this year and am getting scared to crank the system anymore.Any ideas?

This is just a guess since I'm not clairvoyant, but I'd bet the receiver is being driven into clipping and that's what is the cause of the blown woofers. If you've replaced old woofers with new ones and they keep going poof on you, then you should have the receiver checked out by a competent professional of exorcist. I blew a couple of woofers with a 100 watt amp so I switched to a 250 watt amp and no more problems. (Unless you consider a crowd of torch-waving neighbors screaming outside my window to "Turn it down!" a problem.)

The impedance setting on your amp should be set to the total impedance of your speakers (unless indicated in the owner's manual for the amp or on the back panel of the amp itself, that the setting is per speaker). Two 8 ohm speakers = 4 ohms total. Two 4 ohm speakers = 2 ohms. When you say that yours are 6 ohms do you mean each, or the total for the pair? If you mean each, your total load is 3 ohms. (that would be OK for the 4 ohm setting on your amp but not the 8).

That being said, it shouldn't get that hot at low volumes so my crystal ball says get the amp checked by a pro.

First,Thanks for the reply.
Advent rates these speakers at 6 ohms each, with 2 8 inch drivers and a 1 inch dome tweeter each.
Last night I sat at the apex of a 10 foot triangle(left speaker, right speaker, seat)with The Rippington's Sahara playing at the volumes 9 o'clock position with a Radio Shack sound level meter on the footrest in front of me.I switched from 8 ohms to 4 ohms, turning the system off each time, and the spl was 85-95 db at each on the same material(a weighting, slow response).
Now, this is subjective but the music seemed to have more punch with hotter dynamics at 8 ohms.Of course listening at that volume for a half hour may have fatigued my ears.
As for the heat issue, I laid a 4 inch fan,110 volt Radio Shack computer cooling fan directly on top of the unit over the power supply cooling fins blowing upwards and the case is just warm at an 11 o'clock volume setting for one hour.
One last thing,Sony is not junk,I like the sound, features and appearance. It's all in what you like.Peace
OK that's cool but...sometimesjones

If your speakers are 6 ohms each, the total load is 3 ohms, so If I were you I'd leave the selector on 4 just to make the amp happy.

Sony receivers have a reputation for lousy amps-I should know, since I (unfortunately) sold them at Best Buy for three years.

What you are describing about the amplifier getting hot is/was a common occurance. It's most probably (99.999%) chance NOT the speaker's fault. In fact, a buddy at Best Buy (two years ago) said that Sony had issued a recall of their "9" series receivers for "smoking problems" (I can't remember exactly which DE9** model it was, however.) He said every one they sold was returned for just that reason!

Their amps were the worst at handling impedances under 8 ohms. Even JVC's were better.

Personally, if you are financially able, I would toss it in the garbage, and buy something else....and NOT from Sony.
