| Downfiring subs and cement floors | Alkaiser Jul 24, 2001 7:22 AM | | Hi, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what would be best for a basement with a carpeted cement floor... Does a cement floor negatively or possitively affect the performance of a downfiring subwoofer?
I am looking to buy a low end sub, either the Sony SAWM40 for front firing or a JBL PB10 for downfiring.
Thanks. Any and all (constructive) comments are appreciated. |
| Effects of cement floors on speaker performance | Richard Greene Jul 24, 2001 8:20 AM | | Because cement is such a good bass and midrange sound reflector, it can have two negative effects on sound quality compared with a flexible plywood floor: (1) Early reflections off the floor to your ears (harms the stereo image) will be louder with concrete or solid hardwood floors. Carpets/pads/rugs between the speakers and your listening seat reduce these reflections. These early reflections are not a problem for subwoofer bass frequencies (under 80Hz.) (2) Louder floor to ceiling standing wave -- this applies to both front-firing and down-firing subwoofers. Carpets/pads/rugs will have very little effect on these bass frequencies. This problem will be more serious if the ceiling is low (common in basements) and a good sound reflector (very stiff construction). |
