| Phase switch on Velodyne? | Rory Jul 24, 2001 2:32 PM | | What does the phase switch do on my sub? one says 0 and the other 180. I have it on 180. I think it sounds better.

The aim is to get the subwoofer to have the same polarity as the main speakers. This will result in the most bass, because both the sub and the mains will be producing some of the same frequencies and reinforcing each other at those frequencies. The "most" bass will also result in a peak in the response, but that's what the crossover low and high pass filters are for. You can smooth out the peak and a room resonace as well by using the crossover settings.
In most rectangular rooms, a subwoofer gives the smoothest response when placed in a corner. It will also be loudest there, so the volume control should be turned down some. |
