| Eltax LR 6.5 in need of waking up | Hywel Evans Sep 12, 2001 10:59 AM | | I own a pair of the above f/s speakers and while I am happy with their detailed yet warm sound, they do lack a certain excitement factor they're a little too laid back and not engaging enough. Has anybody got any suggestions? Would placing a sock in the port liven them up or perhaps filling their lower section with sand? Could it be the small size of the room they are in (the speakers a rather big) thats causing the problem or my system configuration theyre used with a NAD340 amp and a Cambridge Audio CD5 CD player (with cable talk broadcast 2 interconnects and IXOS6006 speaker cable.) Biwiring the speakers has helped a little. Any advice would be gratefully received. |
| Play w/speaker placement....... | Jetsons Sep 14, 2001 5:46 AM | | You might try toe in the speakers so the tweeters are directly aimed at your ears. This may help focus detail to the listening position. In addition, get them away from the side and front walls as much as possible. This may help reduce bass/wall interaction which should clean up low end performance. Stuffing the bass port can help tighten the bass if speakers positioned in proximity to the front wall, specially if rear ported models.
Sand filling: Don't do it unless the speakers have a specific separate compartment designed for this. Otherwise, you will reduce the cabinet volume. If designed for sand filling, use dry play sand and place it in sealed plastic bags to keep moisture out of the cabinets. In any case, not sure if sand filling would help much.
One more thing. Your speakers have a rated sensitivity of 87dB. You may have to crank your NAD to open up these particular speaks.

| Play w/speaker placement....... | Hywel Evans Sep 15, 2001 3:10 AM | | Thanks Jet, I have tried toeing in the speakers and moving them away from the back walls - and both helped. I think the main problem is the size of the room - the speakers are simply too big for the room they're in. I've swapped them for a pair of old Tannoy 607s which are a lot more lively. The Eltax LR 6.5 have been relegated to my second system which is in a much bigger room and they sing a lot more in their even though attached to lower quality components. |
