| Cone Tweeter vs Dome Tweeter | Denny L Sep 13, 2001 7:56 AM | | I am looking to buy a mini-system in the $300 range, will dome tweeter sound better than cone tweeter for music listening, or it doesn't matter in this price range? |
| re: Cone Tweeter vs Dome Tweeter | paulbl Sep 13, 2001 8:51 AM | | In that range, just getting speakers with a tweeter at all is probably a plus, as opposed to a small 'full-range' driver. To me, cone tweeters sound harsh and grainy, and break-up at higher volumes, (but a lousy dome tweeter can have the same behavior) but then again they tend to be found only in inexpensive systems. |
| Agree with your thoughts... | RuSsMaN Sep 13, 2001 9:35 AM | | One thing to add, its really hard to 'F' up a cone tweeter, however, cheap dome can be very hideous.
I vote for the cone in that price range, but let your ears be the judge.....Most domes in that range will prob be $2 mylar crap, imho....

| Dome de dome dome... (To the tune of the Dragnet theme) | Hyades Sep 15, 2001 1:45 PM | | Paper tweeters are used for one reason... they're cheaper. We used to pay 99 cents for the paper tweets that went into the bottom-line two-ways, and that's no joke. (Foster, for the curious.)The larger diamater of the typical cone tweeter will become more directional as frequency rises, which will have an effect on imaging. Not that many cone tweets can get that high anyway... 14, 15 kHz if you're lucky. The dome is driven at it's circumference, while the cone is driven at it's center, which means the cone isn't being driven over it's entire surface, with resultant nodes and breakups. Audax makes a cute little OEM 3/4" poly dome, found in many lower-priced two-ways. You've seen these, little black dome, 3 spokes, hole in the middle of the phase cap. And they're really not bad at all. So my advice is, go for the domes. |
