| Looking for advice from TV and other subwoofer experts... | Brian Younce Sep 14, 2001 9:20 AM | | O.K., here's the situation: I'm looking for a sub with very good output and excellent EXTENSION, I mean true 16Hz Organ pedal note stuff. There are 2 problems. First, I already own a Velodyne F-1500R that does 95-98dB at 16Hz and 101-103dB at 20Hz in my 2800 cu. ft. with virtually no distortion ( I believe the limiting is engaged before the servo ever detects more than 3% THD) and second, I only want to spend about $200-300 more dollars than what I can get from the sale of my F-1500R. I have an offer of $850 from a friend, so, that gives me a total of around $1100-1200. If I can't do appreciably better than my Velodyne for that amount then I'll just keep it and be happy. BTW, I've already owned a couple of M&K push-pull subs, an Earthquake SuperNova IV-12 and 15 and a Paradigm Servo-15 and none were as satisfying and pure on Organ pedal as the F-1500R. I've grown tired of searching so I ask you for your experiences/advice. Thank you. Brian |

I just got the intermediate model, 20-39pc about two weeks ago and I love it. They perform like subs costing over twice as much. |

The only thing I might want would be an external crossover, perhaps one made by Mirage, so that I could play around with the crossover points. This would not increase the low frequency extension and output, which are very good as is. Not many subs can really reproduce 16 Hz, and the F1500 is certainly one of them.
It is true that the feedback will limit the volume, since they won't play above about 1% or so distortion, if memory serves. But it will evidently play several dB louder in the extreme lows than my sub, which does pretty well on a 32 foot organ pipe. The Velo should be quite satisfactory for most purposes. I'd be very happy with a Velo F-1500, which is an excellent sub.
The Hsu T1220 might be a good bet, and a pair of SVS 16-46 subs would work well, too, from all reports. |
| re: Looking for advice from TV and other subwoofer experts... | Brian Younce Sep 16, 2001 12:01 PM | | Thanks for the replies. Pat, there's actually nothing about my F-1500R that is unsatisfactory, I was just wondering if I could do better in the 16-20Hz range for not much more money. Evidently, from everything I've read on the various internet sites and back issues of mags my only real choices would be Hsu, SVS and Velodyne's own F-1800R/II, FSR-18 or HGS-18. The Velo's cost too much for my taste and the Hsu and SVS subs wouldn't really offer more output at the very bottom without getting a pair (too costly). I'll probably stick with my F-1500R until I come across a nice used 18" Velo or a pair of Hsu's or SVS'. Again, thanks for the reply.
BTW, The SPL numbers I quoted were about 2-3dB before the limiter kicks in, so, I guess I can get damn close to 105dB at 20Hz if I really push it:-) Also, what sub do you currently use?

Click on my 'head' and you can see what I have. |

You can get it with an internal amp (16-46pc) or the passive one like i have (16-46cs). The passive one is 550 including shipping. They have awesome, awesome tech support via email and respond within 24 hours to all questions you have, even to the point of directing you to another company for your needs. The sub is great, musical as well as good for HT. The only difference is that this is not a box, it's a 4 foot cylindrical tube. go to svsubwoofers.com.

The dual 16-46cs/S700 package($1299) is nearly within your $1200 budget and I think it would provide a pretty big headroom gain for you in the 1st octave(16-32hz). I'm guessing the dual 46s would offer about the same clean output as a HGS18 down to the 15hz range(or about the same as dual F1500s).

| Thanks for the reply Tom... | Brian Younce Sep 19, 2001 4:35 AM | | That's what I was hoping. Anyway, I talked to the folks at Velodyne a while back and they said that my F-1500R was essentially an FSR-15 without the x-over bypass and a phase switch, output remained the same. They also said that the HGS-15 would only get me an extra 5-6dB or so of extra output, not such a good deal at $2000 street price. Sounds like dual 16-46CS' is the road I need to travel. Again, thanks for the help. Brian |
