HOW DO I BUILD MY OWN SOUND ABSORBERSRishi

Hey guys,

I just bought a set of klipsch refrence series speakers for hometheatre. They sound great, but they still do not sound like a horn tweeter when you go to a theatre. For example when you go to a theatre the centre speakers sounds so three dimensional and incredibly detailed, where at home it sounds a bit boxy and sounds very bomy instead of smooth. Many have told me this is because of the room acoustics. My room is 18 X 14 X 8, with hardwood floors and one 7 X 9 wool rug. Anyways i was told that i could make my own sound absobers from fiberglass, and this would make huge improvements. IS THIS TRUE, AND IF SO HOW DO I MAKE THESE ABSORBERS. Alsowhere should they be placed in the room and how many do i need. Please dont meansion using egg cartons, i do want my room to look good you no.

Thank You!, in advance.

Actually, I had an entire living room done in egg cartons, years ago. The landlord wasn't REAL pleased. :) You can build your own sound absorbers with some framing lumber, chicken wire, and R-19 insulation (with the paper removed). Their size would depend on the frequencies you're trying to absorb. The lower the frequency, the larger they need to be. But the size and location would be impossible to determine without measuring the actual acoustic peaks and dips in your room, where the actual nodes are occurring, etc. With hardwood floors, sounds to me like you'd have the opposite problem, too bright a sound. Your best bet would probably be to invest in a good graphic EQ. Some even have a built-in RTA that you can use to smooth out the sound. And it would look a lot better than big pink battens. Remember too, that you're not comparing apples with apples, here. Theatre-theatre speakers are in a whole different league than home-theatre speakers.

Go over to audioasylum. Go into the DIY/Tweaks section and do a search on "absorbers".Jon Risch, who I believe is one fo the moderators has pages on how to build your own. The guy is very knowledgealbe about this

If you're looking to use fiberglass insulators, read the health hazard CAUTION carefully.
