Which position is better for surround sound speakers behind u or to the sides?

It will depend on which type of speaker you have. For direct IMHO, I would place them in the rear pointing into the listening area. For dipole and others I have read that side mounting is best.

Try them out both ways and let your ears decide. Mine are two feet behind the listening couch on the side walls directly facing each other. The rears should be more of a diffused sound and not necessarily pointing to the listening area. Some persons actually point them at the back wall if its not far from the speakers. Others lay them sideways pointing at the ceiling. Experiment and find which way they sound best in your room. Have fun.
