In that price range, check out the Paradigm Monitor Series. They work out well for music and HT, and are very good for the money.

I agree the Paradigm Monitor series will meet the requirements. They are a solid, great sounding speaker in HT and music. Also look at the PSB Image series, NHT and KEF has a Cresta line in that range though KEF makes good speakers IMO I have heard no consumer or reviewer feedback on these. If buying new audition, audition, audition.

Best advice and some I wish I had taken: Look for higher line main speakers used. It is not uncommon to see high end speakers at bargain prices. Tougher to audition these you may have to go on reputation.

My suggestion: www.norh.com Take a look at the 5.1 500.00 including shipping. I bought this and am extremely impressed. In addition to being an extremely interesting looking piece, the sound is awesome. Then look them up under audioreview's reviews.
they are awesome. I sold my 1500.00 Bose to buy them and they sound significantly better.

The Paradigms are an excellent suggestion. You may consider Mission 773s or DIY ACI Opals. Another option is the Swan Diva 4.1, possibly 5.1.

JBL S312's. They are big and heavy. Listening to Bach, Beethoven, U2, Van Halen, really anything is addicting. Reviews at http://www.audioreview.com/reviews/Speaker/product_48002.shtml

I was thinking of just about every make out there and compared (under $1000). I got them for under $600 (shipping included).

Dude, you might try listening to a pair of PSB Image 4T's. I recently went shopping for a pair of small floorstanders and was very impressed with this model. They had plenty of bass response, excellent midrange clarity, decent treble performance and lots of dynamic range. I listened to them as well as a pair of B&W CM-4's at the same store. They were almost the equal to the B&W's except for the treble quality and the cabinetry. I ended up buying the B&W's, but only for the furniture grade finish on the speakers, Which I had been wanting for years. I've had lots of speakers over the years, (DCM Timeframes, NEAR 10M's, Focus High Definition Monitors, Genesis G2's and several pairs of mass market junkers)and the PSB's do justice to just about any kind of music without the glaring treble response found in many lower cost speakers. I listened to dozens of brands of speakers since I got interested in this hobby 15 years ago and was very impressed with this product overall. Anyway, listen to lots of products before you decide and have fun in the process!
