| Powered towers -vs- Dynaudios & Sub | LazyBoy Dec 1, 2001 5:43 AM | | A friend is shopping for a new stereo system. He eventually wants to build a full music / HT system. For amplification he is looking at the Marantz SR-19. He is going to buy a pair of main speakers first. I suggested that he check out the Dynaudio 60's or 80's on closeout @ Listenup.com.
Based on reviews and comments on this forum I thought they looked like a very good deal at the price they are running. I guess at some time he would have to buy a sub, center and surrounds to complete a HT setup. If he stays with Dyns that could get a bit expensive and he did not want to spend a lot on equipment. My second thought was that powered towers might be a good option to start with. I was wondering what brands might be on par with the Dyns in the $750.oo - $1.5k range for mains. Any recommendations on powered towers -vs- towers plus a sub? Remember he will be adding a center and surrounds down the road. He probably only wants to spend $400.oo - $600.oo on the rest of the speakers. A few brands with powered towers that I have suggested he might check out, Klipsch, NHT, Polk, Boston Acoustic, Acoustic Research. |
| You left out........ | BK Dec 1, 2001 6:40 AM | | Definitive Technology. Probably the leader in the powered tower category.
9 x out of 10 though, a set of mains and a separate sub will outperform powered towers. More flexibilty in terms of placement also.
That being said, DT makes some very impressive powered towers, I would look at the BP2006TL. |
| No local dealers | LazyBoy Dec 1, 2001 9:31 AM | | No local DT dealer in Tallahasse, FL or many other brands for that matter so. The only local options are BB, CC, Sound Advice or mail order. How about PSB 6T's? He will probably do this slowly piece by piece. So he can probably live without a sub for music to start. I'm trying to convince him not to go to CC/BB and buy JBL or Crewin Vegas class of speakers. Sh*T the guy makes 50k a year but he just wants to do this as cheap as he can. |
| Well....... | BK Dec 1, 2001 11:29 AM | | you're trying to do the right thing anyway by steering him from CC and BB.
No local dealer, huh? That's unusual, but he may be able to work that to his advantage. Most dealers do not allow shipping of their products, UNLESS you have no dealer in your area. In this case, you may be able to call around and get a good discount. Or at least get some different prices. Worth a shot.....
I have listened to the 6T and it's a nice speaker. Plenty of bass. Your buddy could easily get by without a sub with the 6T.
Ofcourse, my personal recommendation will always be Dynaudio though :)
Do whatever you can to keep your friend from the big chains, he'll thank you for it 1 day.
Good luck

| Axiom ? | LaztBoy Dec 2, 2001 10:16 AM | | Has anyone here had a chance to listen to AXIOM speakers?
The Epic 80 Home Theater System looks like a good complete 5.1 system @ $2400.oo |
| Axiom ? | tedman Dec 3, 2001 6:03 AM | | I have. I'm a big fan of Axiom and they will give Def Tech a good run for there money for roughly half the price. These are quality products. I was shopping for a sub at the time and looked at their Epicenter175. It was a bit too pricey for me but it did sound good, especially for music. The towers give a broad well defined and deep soundstage. Very smooth. If you get the chance, audition them!! |
