| Please advise an audio system to be used in a restaurant | tng6728 Dec 1, 2001 6:51 AM | | Hi everybody,
We plan to equip our renovated small Vietnamese restaurant of 800 square feet. Please give advice on an audio system that can give soft background but distinguished stereo surrounding sound. Please give me 2 options: economic package and excellent choice if possible. Your expertise opinion is invaluable. With many thanks.

I've heard several small restraunts using garden variety small speakers that provided excellent, musicaly balanced background music. I would lean more towards musical clarity than big bass for this application.
Any small, decent sounding home stereo speaker will do fine. You will want to use two pairs at least. I've heard a lot of small Mission, Polk, Boston Acoustics and even Radio Shack speakers doing yeoman service in these duties. These should be mounted high up the walls, preferably near the corners, and facing slightly downwards towards the diners.
This is to provide decent coverage without having to play any one set too loud. If you had only one pair, to be heard by the diners farthest away from thespeakers, they would have be playing too loud for those near the speakers. You do not want the music to be loud enough to drown out their conversation.
Now the bad news. Forget about trying to maintain a stereo image. This is possible over only a small area. You might be able to satisfy one, maybe two tables at most and this would probably be at the expense of the surrounding diners. Stick to a mono background type system.
This setup should be easily and inexpensively attainable since many small stereo receivers or amps provide switching for two sets of speakers and your speaker needs are not extravagent. |

Remember that all you're providing is incidental music, a soothing backdrop against which people can converse and relax. Too much high end can be distracting in that type of environment, so try to find a very "soft" sounding speaker. |

The speakers run $150 for the drums and $199 for the Prisms. The website is http://www.norh.com. |
