Does anybody have any experiences with Energy E:XL-S10 subwoofers? They just went on sale at the Good Guys, down from $450 to $299, and they look and sound pretty sweet. Any anecdotes? Thanks, everybody.

I never tried the 10", but had an EXLS-12 for a couple of months. Wasn't bad, but did have a very low hum noise, which after I checked all the other possibilities, was associated with the transformer being a little too tightened at the factory (I called the company sales folks and apparently my experience was not unique). It bothered me enough that I wound up trading it in (and paying a little more) for a NHT SubOne. As I recall, I only paid $450 for the Energy 12", so $300 may or may not be a good deal for the 10. Sound-wise the Energy was pretty okay but the 10" NHT much outperformed the 12" Energy IMHO. If you do get one I suggest checking it closely for hum, fit and finish.

Yes, I have the eXL-S10 in my system. This sub is OK for movies but I just can't stand it with musics. I tried all kinds of positioning and adjustment to blend it with my Paradigm Studio 60 but still not happy. Bass for music is kind of boomy so I hardly ever use it except for movies!

If you're into music and have the money to do it right the first time, then skip the eXL-S10!

The reason that I bought this sub in the first place was to fix the $h!tty Bose's bass module. However, it was a pain in the @$$ to try and blend this sub in with the Bose's bass module. So, I closed my eyes and got rid of the Bose system for 50 lousy bucks, which costed me over $1100!

I used to own an ES-12 that I bought for $400 over the net. I always thought it did a pretty good job on movie soundtracks, but it never satisfied me on music... When I later replaced it with an ACI Titan and then a Titan II... I realized what I was missing in both areas with the ES-12. My suggestion is that if you plan on using the sub soley for films, then you should be OK... on music I would look elsewhere... For about $100 more you could buy an ACI Quake or a RAVA mailorder... through local stores I would look at a Def. Tech Prosub 100TL, or even an AR S300 sub (both also about $100 more). ---Dave
