| nOrh speakers | gerard Sep 15, 2001 8:04 PM | | hi, i'm going to get the nOrh ceramic 4.0's, for my bedroom setup, i'm thinking about making a subwoofer, or buying a cheap music suited sub. does anyone know of any good subs for my setup in a bedroom, for a reasonable price, say no more than $300-400 (AUS).
cheers! |

There is an Australian distributor of Shiva drivers in the eastern states. I think the driver goes for about $250 inc GST, shipped to Perth.

Buy a second hand cheap amp from the weekends paper...the more juice the better...and it must be capable of driving a 4 ohm load.
You will also need an active xover, 24dB/octave slope in order to make it invisible...this is where is starts to get a little tricky. To get in under your budget, you will probably need to do it yourself. Its still going to cost $150 to make. Look at the kit (and the corresponding power supply) at www.sound.au.com project 9 and 5.
Then you need to think about what you want to be able to achieve with the sub...and how large you can handle the enclosure to be. I would be probably be going after a sealed design for a music only application, but it is possible to do a vented well..
BTW, for the enclosure, Formatube (its the aussie equivilant for sonotube) is probably the best bet on a budget. Not the best looking however.. |

cheers anyway! |

| re: nOrh speakers | mile Sep 16, 2001 9:05 AM | | Hi Gerard,
I'm currently in the market for subwoofers too, and think I'm going with the SVS subs, check them out at:
www.svsubwoofers.com
They have two, one a $369, and one at $449, I'm probably getting the second one... on caveat, these are unpowered subs, so you need an amplifier for them. I happen to have an AV receiver (Denon 2801) and an older Kenwood receiver from the '70s, a KR-9600. You can send the sub output from the AV receiver, and use an older receiver/amplifier to power the SVS subs, which is what I plan to do.
If you have the luxury of an older amp/receiver, you should DEFINITELY read the reviews on the SVS site, they sound like the best sub going for the money, for both HT and music... also look at:
http://www.audioreview.com/reviews/Subwoofer/product_48444.shtml
This is the $449 model, but backup to the "S" on the product review page, and you can see other reviews of the SVS series... good luck in your choice, and I hope to purchase one myself in the coming two months :) |
| Best bet, but....... | PJ Sep 16, 2001 3:28 PM | | Shipping to us down here in Australia is $US100-200 each. Shipping costs alone would be gerard's entire budget. |
