| How much better does DVD-Audio make good speakers sound? | Call Me Curious Nov 28, 2001 9:13 AM | | Has anyone out there tested a DVD-audio player with a good quality surround setup? I use 5 Ascend CBM-170s and a Hsu Research sub as my 5.1 setup and listen to a lot of DVD video concerts. I'm amazed by the sound quality, which is clearly better than CD, and am wondering if DVD-audio would sound significantly better on my setup or not? I'm intrigued with the higher sampling rate and the surround aspect of DVD-audio, but cant find anywhere near us where I can demo it on a good speaker system. Im kind of thinking of asking my wife for a DVD audio player for Christmas, but want to get some input first as to how much better I can expect it to sound.
P.S. I know this isnt exactly a speaker question, but I figured the folks who own good speakers would be the most likely to have tested DVD-audio out and have an opinion on it. Any info on SACD would be appreciated too. |

The specification for DVD Video allows 24 bit 96K sound. If you like jazz try one of the Chesky discs (www.Chesky.com, they're having a 25% off sale right now). These are recorded at 24 bit and 96 K and will give you a pretty good idea of how DVD Audio will sound, since the specification for DVD Audio isn't that much different.
