Speakers for 1500 or understereoface
Nov 30, 2001 8:07 PM
OK, I have been working really hard and I have finally been able to save 1500 for new speakers. I am looking for front speakers only either bookshelf or floor standing. The problem I have is I have a wide variety of uses I need the speakers to fulfill. I am a college student so I need them to both be front speakers ina home theater as well as quality music speakers. I have a Denon AVR 3300 to run my system. I listen to everything from Radiohead. 311. and other alternative music to things that are more demanding of quality such as alot of jazz and classical music. I know I will get a couple of quips about how I dont need high quality speakers b/c I listen to alot of 311 and stuff like that but that is just part of my musical taste so please any suggestions for a pair of speakers that will be awesome and last for a long itme to fill these wide range of purposes would be greatly appreciated.

Agree with TIC, you are wasting you money if you use the Denon as amplification. A good $500 - $600 (may be even $300) speakers will be more than enough.

B&W 603 S2 or CDM 1NT (bookshelf). Both should be in your budget. You'll need a sub with either to really make em shine. Strong, articulate speakers. They should be ok being driven by the 3300.

There are so many speakers in that price range, can you narrow it down a bit? What speakers have you heard that you liked? Horns? Metal dome tweeters? Soft dome tweeters? It will take some time, but you might want to take a look around here at some past threads and see what people are talking about, then go to www.avsforum.com, and www.audioasylum.com and do the same. For more product info on brands that seem to be likely candidates, you can use this manufaturers link to look at their offerings. http://www.wssh.net/~wattsup/arsl.html

Although it can be tough to get an accurate depiction in a showroom of how a speaker will sound in your room, it's also a good idea to look and listen to as many speakers as you can find in your local area. If nothing else it should lead you to some basic design preferences. Beware of speakers with a high "boom and tizz" factor ie. boomy bass or sharp treble. What may seem attractive at first can be fatiguing or distracting during extended listening sessions.

BTW your Denon is a good, clean, and powerful enough unit so don't worry about upgrading it unless/until you find it's features to be lacking. As long as you're not overdriving it's amp section into clipping the audible differences between it and other more expensive integrated or seperate units will range between slight and non-existant. In blind auditions of equipment those who support the idea that solid state components vary wildly in sound quality find that the differences they claim often can't be discerned, nor items identified once they can't see the components to which they're listening. Speakers are the least perfect part of the audio chain and make by far the biggest difference in system sound quality.

Happy shopping!

Take your pick, Theatre or Stage Series 4pi:

I'm not a shill, I'm building the 7pi corner horns myself.

There's even a forum for more info:

I gave my parents an old Pro-Logic Denon receiver and a pair of Mission 773 speakers (old 2-driver version). It sounds so good in their room I wish that I had kept them (never sounded that good in my space). So you can look for something in the Mission line of speakers they will be a good match for the Denon. The 77-series has been discontinued , maybe you can find a close-out for real cheap. Their new lines appear to be the 78 series and the m70 series. Check them out too.

You should also check out the Bach floorstander from Vienna Acoustics. Really great speakers that will stand the test of time as you upgrade the rest of your equipment. Some people will say that they are overkill for your receiver, but they will work and sound great.

For that price it depends upon if you need a sub or not. If not, then you may want to consider the nOrh SM 6.9 video package. If so, the SM 6.1 video package with an Adire Audio Rava should work wonderfully for you.
