| Please help me with speaker placement | Tom M Jan 17, 2002 9:57 PM | | If you place book shelf speakers a foot out from the wall behind them is this too close? I would like to buy a pair of small speakers for my stereo system. The room is small and this would leave me with little choice than to place the speakers close the the wall behind them. I would like to get the best sound I can inspite of the close quarters I have. FYI...The room is very small only about 10x12ft. |
| only one thing to do... | midfiman Jan 18, 2002 8:44 AM | | the best advice is, you have to buy them and listen to them throughout your room yourself. Otherwise, you just can't tell. There are hundreds of things in your room that will affect the acoustic output of these speakers vs someone else with the same speakers and same size room. Buy them, you can always return them. Then move them around and take a few hours to listen. See what happens. Only you can determine what position is best for your listening preferences and placement.
Good luck. |
| A foot is enough | A S E P Jan 21, 2002 10:08 PM | | Let's classify speakers as bookshelf, stand-mounting and floorstander.
As it's name implies, bookshelf *should* be designed to be put on bookshelves.
They should have been designed for wonderfull highs and mids, not
excessive bass. For these, the bookshelf may have been designed without
baffle/port, or at least it has front (not rear) baffle.
If the *bookshelf* has rear baffle, a foot is acceptable (2-way 6-inch
in a 10x12). For small speakers, distance between speakers is almost
the only aspect of speaker placement to consider. Anyhow, I choose
more distance even for the smallest rear-baffle speakers. Ease in
cable maintenance is a plus :)
If the bookshelf has no baffle, a foot is not acceptable. You may run out
of space to sleep comfortably. For a very small speakers, you do have
an option to hang them on the wall/ceilling. These have many advantages. |
