How to test/but a subwooferkenzie
Jan 18, 2002 9:41 AM
Currently I have an Energy 10" sub that came with my Energy Take 5 system. I have since upgraded my speakers to Boston Acoustics VR 950s as my mains. I am thinking about a new sub and was wondering how you guys "auditoned" your subs. When I was looking at my speakers I brought my own CDs and spent an hour and a half in the speaker room at my local a/v store.

Any suggestions would be helpful....

I didn't. But I did go to several stores and auditioned theirs. Didn't care for them because they were too boomy for my tastes. Ended up getting a SVS 20-39CS (non-powered model). Figured I could either sell it for close to what I paid for it or return it if I didn't care for it. Let's just now say the SVS isn't going anywhere anytime soon (unless I decide to upgrade to a higher model). Even if I couldn't upgrade I would remain 100% happy with my SVS.

Buy Don Dorsey's CD Bachbuster. I don't like classical, but this is the BEST way to truly see what a sub is made of. The CD is the only one I've seen with a warning label inside the jacket - Warning, low level playback sould be iniciated until a safe level for your audio equipment is determined. They aren't kidding!!! I can't even count the number of speakers I've blown with it!!! Another good way is to use a poorly recorded 70's or 80's heavy metal cd (preferably the band uses a double bass drum). The faster, harder, & poorly recorded combo seperates good subs from bad one's!!! Also try to audition sub's in a room roughly the same size of your listening room. A smaller room than yours will boost the bass, so taking it home would be a disappointment. Also check this website first. Read the reviews, form a list of high rated possibilities. P.S. I don't use a powered sub... I have a H/K sig. 1.5 amp (running 350 wattsx2 cont.) pushing a Kicker Solo-baric (newest version-15") in a 6 cu.ft. sealed box made from 2 layers of 3/4" MDF, heavily braced. It's so good I've had to replace the nails that hold pictures with screws throughout my whole house!!! It sound great!!!
