I have a pair of 8 ft speakers that I bought from a friend a few years ago and I don't know any thing about them except they are electrostatic and sounded good when I bought them with amps, preamp and all the hookups, since then I was robbed of everything but the speakers. my question is does any one know of any history on them such as wattage handling, ohms or there value? On the back of the black case at the bottom of speaker is has written mk121-b magnekinetic interface, also medalion transformer and Acoustat on the front. Can anyone enlighten me on what I own and are they worth keeping and buying another amp and other equipment.I appreciate any Information given.

You are lucky, because you just bought a very good loudspeaker, Acoustat.
If you want to know more about the Loudspeaker, please open the site of Acoustat, Commersial ELS, in audiocircuit.com, and you will get a lot information about many types of Acoustat. I just bought a pair of Acostat Spectra 66 (built in 1990), a very good loudspeaker like yours. I will keep this speaker for very long time in the future. Please look my comments in this website.

Best Regards, FAG.

Thanks for the info on the acoustat's and the web site I was ready to put them on the auction block"so to speak" because I have not had them hooked up to any thing for about a year now, and didn't plan to reinvest in any more equipment to use them on, But.............I think I can say that they are worth a second chance in my book!!!!I had an offer of 400.00 from a coworker.....had the cash in my hand then turned around and gave it back 2 hours later before the work day was over and before he could come to pick them up something told me I was making a big mistake. so maybe it"s karma or something Thanks again! kdavis Indianapolis, Indiana. Based on what you have described, I believe that you have a pair of Acoustat 2+2S's, which are still a very fine loudspeaker. I had tremendous success using a Krell KSA-250 power amplifier and Tara Labs RSC cable with them; there was plenty of power to drive them and the cables were clean and clear--thus, able to deliver all the signal to those remarkable speakers.

By the way, I would have kept mine, except that the media room in my new house (which was supposed to have ceilings of at least 8') were only 7'9" on one end (the wrong end!) and I had to sell them, as they would not fit.

The resale value of these speakers may, today, be only a few hundred dollars, but I assure you that they will do much more service and provide more fine sound than many more conventional speakers costing more than their original $2,500 price.

Enjoy!

Jonathan, I absolutely agree with you about the sound quality of Acoustat Loudspeaker. I bought a pair of Acoustat Spectra 66 in a very good condition from an ex-Acoutat dealer in Jakarta. I connect this speaker to NAD 200 (a powerful power-amp),Sunfire Classic Tube preamp, NAD 500 CD player, and all Cardas Golden Reference interconnect & power cables. If we connect this speaker to a correct system and put it at a correct position, this speaker will produce a very natural, open, warm, clear/clean, and transparent sound with an incredible wide, deep and magnificent soundstage, without making our ears fatigue. The bass is deep enough until 28hz. Unfortunately, the grill colth was torn in some parts and until now I still do not know where to buy the new replacement for the grill cloth.I have failed to send email to The Upholsery Company in Meza Arizona to buy the grill cloth. Best regard Gun.

Gun,I'm beginning to shop around for the right components to use on the acoustats, I've decided to keep them. any way my cloths were torn also and a friend of mine suggested I go to a fabric store and purchase new fabric and take off the old grill cloth and use it as a pattern and have new fabric sewn together and replace it on speakers, anyway it worked for me and it only cost a mere $8.00 for the fabric. well it might be worth it to check that out, good luck and hope it helps you. back to you......kdavis.

kdavis, thanks so much for your suggestion, but you should be careful to choose a correct fabric for this Acoustat. If you choose a wrong fabric, this fabric can distort the sound quality of this speaker. I got information from Acoustat website (audiocircuit.com) that Ren & Shirley Jenson can help us to replace Acoustat grill cloth or grill sock with an original fabric for this loudspeaker. The address is "The Upholsery Comp.Inc", 418 N Hunt Dr.Mesa, Arizona 85203, Telp.No:+1(888)994-8273; Fax.+1(480)898.9546.I tried to contact them through email & fax , but I failed. Best regards, Gun.

GUN In regards to the grill cloth used on my panels, I took the original covering to the fabric store and they matched it with the same fabric so their was not any sound change, the only difference was I used a charcoal color cloth instead of the offwhite color it seemed to make the cosmetics of the loudspeakers not look so large in the room....or more wife/freindly to those of you who have that problem, just an Idea! well still looking for amps and preamps, know any good websites for used equipment? thanks for any help. kdavis

I truly enjoy my acoustat speakers much to my wifes dismay. She would rather see some skinny ass B&O's. I stumbled upon 2 pairs at a house sale and was able to purchase 2 acoustat 3's in good shape with the covers intact, and a pair of acoustat spectra 11's which were pristine. I use the three's as front speakers in a home theatre. I set them up as low midrange to high and send the base to a powered velodyne sub. I use the tall spectra II's as rear speakers. I use a modified adcom 555 power amp for each set. They do like good clean power. I then filled the center with a Martin Logan Logos center channel. The fun thing is I bought all 4 Acoustat speakers for $250.00.

I was also able to find some of the literature from the speakers at the sale which includes the 3's the 4's and the 2+2's. Maybe I can scan them and put them on-line for you.

Keep what you have and enjoy, unless you have 5 grand to replace them.

gandalfthewhite, you are very lucky, because you bought 4(four)good speaker at very very cheap prices. Normal market price range for used-Acoustat speaker can be read in Acoustat website (audiocircuit.com).
So keep your 4 good speakers and enjoy your good home-theater and music. Friendly greeting from Indonesia.
