| Dazed and Confused -- Please Help!! | Greg922 Jan 18, 2002 7:42 PM | | This site is great but the more I read the more I get confused -- so someone is just going to have to make a decision for me. I am looking for speakers for a HT and audio set-up 50/50. I have a Marantz Receiver SR8000, Pioneer Elite 510 Television and Marantz 5 disc Progressive Scan DVD player. The room is 15x20 and opens on one side to another room that is 8x12. I live in an apartment building so I can't, and do not want to rattle the walls. I like warm sounding speakers -- not bright -- and I want to match the piano black gloss finish on the Pioneer Television. I want either an all satellite system or floor standing for the mains and satellites for the surround. I can spend up to $2,500 -- but would like to spend less if possible. I am your average guy who knows good sound and bad sound -- likes warm mid range sound -- but I am not the sophisticated audiophile that everyone else seems to be on this site -- so I defer to you all -- with all of the above in mind -- please help me make a decision! Thank you thank you thank you. |

Here is a link where to get them. They also carry the HSU VTF-2 subwoofer. They have a special on the whole package incl. center and surrounds. Happy Hunting.

Here is a link with lots of discussion about them. Got to Home Theater General to... Audio and HiFi to... "Diva's Best Speaker for the money ever?"

| re: Dazed and Confused -- Please Help!! | TinHere Jan 19, 2002 10:09 AM | | The 6.1s are $1299. They have a special including a C-3 center and R-3 surrounds for $1898. Here is a link to the manufacturer [not distributor AV123.com].

| re: Dazed and Confused -- Please Help!! | RGA Jan 18, 2002 11:09 PM | | Easy choice B&W CDM 1NTS...consistantly the best reviewed speakers(and company) on this little planet of ours. http://www.bwspeakers.com/products/gallery/product_details.cfm?object_id=419DBF0C-EF4D-11D3-B01E0000E20E7DA6
My seconds...
http://www.mission.co.uk/main.htm
http://www.dynaudiona.com/products/product1.htm
http://www.focal.tm.fr/gb/home/index.htm
All of these offer terrific sound and none of these are bright. JM Labs and Mission may have the most subdued tweeters which you may like best...in general I would try and avoid speakers using a metal tweeter...silk domes or ribbon etc. B&W with the Nautilus keeps the advantage of drive in the upper frequency but eliminates most of the nasties that come with it. nOhr is the only other speaker design for cheap that I know that does this(I've not heard them though). PMC, as much as I like them, also suffer a bit in this regard.
Nevertheless...you should not let others decide for you...I would start with some of these brands I've listed, I've deliberately chosen speakers with varying designs and they all sound quite different...They all sound very good and they are all top flight manufacturers...Listen to them and decide... |
| Thanks but still need more Speaker Help!! | Greg922 Jan 19, 2002 6:53 AM | | Thanks for your replies -- but I am looking for a satellite system or floorstanding with satellite surrounds and a piano black glossy finish to match the tv. Any other suggestions, please. |
| Thanks but still need more Speaker Help!! | 46minaudio Jan 19, 2002 7:11 AM | | S&V March issue just tested a 6 speaker syetem with silk dome tweeters from Acoustic Research with a piano black glossy finish.Having never heard them I dont have a clue how they sound. |
| Thanks but still need more Speaker Help!! | New Guy Jan 19, 2002 8:30 AM | | Try the axiom Epic 80 or 60 package. Very highly rated. 30 day money back.

| Thanks but still need more Speaker Help!! | ed_jacobson Jan 19, 2002 9:36 AM | | If you primary criteria is a high gloss black finish, you can try the NHT 2.9s as fronts and the 1.5 as surrounds in that price range.

But like others have suggested, Dynaudio and B&W are certainly worth a listen in this price range - they come in a black ash finish. |
| Go NHT | Norm Strong Jan 19, 2002 12:29 PM | | NHT Super 2 for the mains and SuperOnes for the center and surround. The entire set will run under $1500, and they are all in piano black. Set the receiver for large mains. |
| Norm is right, like always... | numznutz Jan 19, 2002 1:27 PM | | ...even if I don't usually agree.
As a staunch defender of NHT, my take is that their performance per dollar expended ratio is at the top of the heap IMHO. |
| Norm is right, like always... | Mr2A Jan 21, 2002 10:06 PM | | I think you should check out: www.cheaphometheater.com and www.bettercables.com and see what you like. Personally, I think you should grab your favorite CD's and DVD's....and go speaker shopping!...that's a fun thing to do. talk to your friends...read the reviews posted here and have a blast!....by the way, I have a Klipsch System that I really love. |
