| wharfedale diamond 8.1- question for tgfuwc | green grass Mar 29, 2002 8:26 AM | | hi tgfuwc,
i've been thinking of getting 5 wharfedale diamond 8.1's for my home setup (2-front mains, 1-center channel, 2-rear surrounds). already have a sub for lfe's. whats your opinion of how these would sound for music and home theater?
or should i get 2-8.2's for the front mains?
thanks for reply! |
| How good are the Diamonds? | Prodigy Mar 29, 2002 9:36 AM | | I used to have a pair of wharfedales but they were shat.
I've currently got a pair of Tannoy Mercury MkIIs from the mid 1908s as my fronts - would the diamond 8.2s be better? (I can get them for £70).
I currently can play up to around 0db comfortably on my 100W marantz amp which means they must be taking quite a bit of power and the bass is strong down to around 60hz.
Just seem a few people speaking highly of them - are they worth the money? |
| How good are the Diamonds? | RGA Mar 29, 2002 1:25 PM | | Few people speak of them because they have not been in the mainstream American Market for more than 5 years. The company has since been bought by Quad/Mission and the company began a resurgence. It has since been sold yet again and the new ownership has made some inroads...using design topologies from B&W and others but at a lot less money...which is why they are What-Hifi's Best Budget speaker in their class.
The Name has stayed the same but the speakers are a lot better...back to when the company was a good solid brand in the 80s and very early 90s.
Besides that I hate some of the speakers that people talk a lot about here...this is not exactly a high end forum.
Think about Tannoy is a heck of a speaker for a lot of folks and it never gets much mentioned here...I have not heard the new line but they too look good and are well reviewed. http://www.wharfedale.co.uk/ |
| Ok thanks | Prodigy Mar 30, 2002 2:37 AM | | I think my best bet is to simply go and hear them for myself if I can so I can compare them to what I've got already.
Cheers |
| re: wharfedale diamond 8.1- question for tgfuwc | tgfuwc Mar 29, 2002 12:48 PM | | If I was to diverge from the 8.1's I would recommend the 8.3's which won the supertest in Dec 2001(I think) issue of WhatHifi. I will say you cannot go wrong with the 8.1's however. I must admit that the only Diamonds I've heard are the 8.1's. They really sound awesome for the money! I've only heard them for music so far since I only have them at work. I think 2 sets of 8.1's with a matching center channel would probably sound great and if you have 5channel stereo would be incredible. |

By the way here's a link about just such a system |
| re: wharfedale diamond 8.1- question for tgfuwc | green grass Mar 29, 2002 2:41 PM | | hey, thanks for the replies tgfuwc and RGA.
am currently using wharfedale and mission for
home setup, but i would like to try a matched setup
of the 8.1s. i would be using an 8.1 as my center channel also since a pair of the 8.1's is the same price as their center channel speaker.
from the info i've read so far, using the 8.1's as fronts
should be ok, since i will be using a sub for lfe's.
whats your thoughts on this? and yes tgfuwc, i will
be using it for 5 channel.
by the way, have you listened to the pacific series yet?

| re: wharfedale diamond 8.1- question for tgfuwc | tgfuwc Mar 29, 2002 3:30 PM | | I haven't heard the Pacific series-heck, I bought the 8.1's based on the reviews I've read! I figured for $156 (including shipping) how could I go wrong? Turns out I love 'em! I've just got one question....are you going to use one 8.1 as your center? They came to me as a pair in one box.....are you goint to use the other for 6.1? |
| re: wharfedale diamond 8.1- question for tgfuwc | green grass Mar 29, 2002 5:51 PM | | Ya, I'm going to use one 8.1 for a center and the other one I'll probably keep as a spare or maybe I'll sell it.
best regards,

| re: wharfedale diamond 8.1- question for tgfuwc | tgfuwc Mar 29, 2002 11:28 PM | | Well I hope you like them! It'll be more than worth the $500 you'll spend for the 3 pair. Let us know here how you like them when you get them. |
| re: wharfedale diamond 8.1- question for tgfuwc | toddo97 Mar 30, 2002 5:57 AM | | I've been looking for speakers for a ht system myself & always thought wharfedales would be well outside of my price range. http://www.wharfedale.co.uk/# advertises their diamond 8 home cinema system which includes 2 diamond 8.3s, 2 8.1s, & a diamond 8 center for "starting from 399 pounds" which, when I exchanged them w/ my handy dandy currency exchanger, came to only $568 which is well w/in my price range. |
