comments sought on the new Energy Connoisseur speakersjwd1

I was speaker shopping the other day and the salesman had me listen to the new Energy Connoisseur C-5. He claimed they are better than the Paradigm Studio/40, and while I'm not sure that's true I definitely liked them alot (and they cost less).

Since these speakers are so new, I haven't yet found any reviews of them, but if anyone out there has bought a pair and would care to comment, that would be great! Also, if you own them, would you care to comment on what rears and sub you are matching them with.

Paradigm's a favorite on this board but there are countless other brands that provide as much bang for the buck. Energy and Paradigm are so similar in design philosophy that they could almost be the same brand. Either brand is a safe bet. Choose based on what you prefer.

Energy discontinued their old Connoisseur line a few years ago - C4, C6, and C8. I auditioned them when they were still made and if I had bought any speaker at the time, it would have been these. In fact, I've been looking for a used pair of C-6's for one of my rooms. I just bought Paradigms and I'll agree, the sounds are similar from what I remember of those Energys, with the Energy's being a bit more in your face with their metal cones.

I don't know if the new C's are comparable to the old, but if they are they put out a good speaker.

Energy should have something to use as a rear, something with the same drivers in a smaller package maybe?

out of curiosity, which Paradigms did you go with, and how do you like them so far?

I went with the Studio 100's and 20's for the rear. I haven't gotten them yet, I ordered them over the weekend and I expect them soon. The first time I listened to the 100's I wasn't that impressed, however the dealer hadn't set them up very well - about 6 or 7' out from the wall - and running through a receiver.

I then heard them set up better and run with a 150 wpc amp and the sound was 100 times better. I wasn't even going to give them a second listen but I heard them while someone else was playing with them and decided to consider them. They ended up sounding best to my ears. Really a good sound. Gotta have some power to run through them from what I hear, so I got a separate amp for them.

Good luck checking out those C-5's. I've actually been looking for a used pair of C-6's for another system.
