| Why are my speakers hissing? | FCobra94 Mar 31, 2002 5:52 PM | | When the volume is turned all the way up with the reciever on with no input signal my front and center channel speakers hiss a low level...???
They are all connecting with good speaker wire but the RCA cables coming from the PS@ and satellite reciever are all the one's the components came with.
With my rear surround speaker the hiss is much louder, even when at a normal volume. I connected it like this:
14 gauge speaker cable from the speaker to a terminal, brass banna plugs through two pieces of connected 14 gauge speaker wire then into the reciever...
You can't hear the front and center channel speakers hissing when listening to a movie or anything, just when turning it up all the way with no signal but the rear is very noticable. Any ideas on why the rear speaker hisses that loud?
Thanks for the help! |

| All powered electronics produce hiss/noise. | markw Mar 31, 2002 6:14 PM | | Ht signal processors most of all. The more highs the speakers put out the more noticable it will be.
If you have to turn the unit up to full volume and/or put your ears to the speakers don't worry about it.
Cables ain't gonna do a damn thing for ya here except drain your wallet. |

The speakers/wires are just reproducing what the receiver is sending. It is not that unusual for there to be a low level hiss at maximum gain with no signal present, it is the noise floor of the receiver and is (usually) inaudible at regular program listening levels.
In my experience, lower cost receivers cut corners on the back channel amps (even the ones that claim equal power). I had an old Sony A/V Pro Logic, it hissed like a steam leak on the back channels, the decoder/steering logic probably contributed alot to that. |

Yeah, the front five speakers aren't noticable at all when it comes to the hissing sound unless I tuen it up w/o a signal...My big problem right now is the rear speaker hooked to one of the surround channels...But I suspect it's the reciever...oh well...any suggestions to make it less noticable? Thanks again! |
| Don't worry | sam9 Apr 1, 2002 1:04 PM | | It's the electronics as mentioned by others. It is normal and nothing to worry about unless you can hear it when you are playing something. Don't wast sleep or money on it. |
