subwoofer question and request for recommendationsjwd1
Apr 1, 2002 6:26 PM
As I shop for a new subwoofer, I have one important issue on which I want to be certain. Is it correct that, unlike with all the other speakers in a home-theater setup, the subwoofer can be from a completely different speaker family or even manufacturer without affecting the overall sound of the system? I just don't want some unscrupulous salesperson to BS me.

Also, I'd appreciate some suggestions for a good $800 or less sub for my room, which has 18 foot ceilings and is open along one side to most of the rest of the apartment (my bldg is a renovated textile mill). This is obviously alot of volume. One salesman I dealt with kept talking about how the sub had to be able to "pressurize" the entire volume of air. Was he just BSing me, or does he have a point?

a sub does not need to be from the same company as your other speakers. For $800, I would take a serious look as SVsubwoofers.com. Check out the 16-46pci. It'll blow you away.

Hi.
You can put any brand/mkodel of sub with the rest of your speakers. No problem at all. Moreover, speaker efficiency will not be an issue provided you hook an active (i.e. amplified) subwoofer, like the vast majority in the market today. Yoú´ll always be able to manage volume levels to fill your taste.

Regarding room volume, your salesperson is right in part. Not only subs, but ANY speaker has to ¨pressurize¨ the air in the room. The difference lies in frequency and intensity. Low freqs. need a lot of moving air to be perceived, that means a lot of power from the amp. Add to this the fact that distortion is not so audible below 50 Hz or so. High frequencies, on the contrary, need little air volume, so ¨pressurizing¨ at those freqs. are not a matter for a normal amplifier, but distortion is, ´cause human ears are very sensitive to distortive soundwaves from 300 - 500 Hz up.

Hope this helps.
Regards.
Marcelo.

You won't believe it until you hear it. If you don't have a spare amplifier, go with one of the PCi's. If you do happen to have some sort of amplifier, save money and get one of the CS or CS Plus passive cylinders. They will destroy anything that's close to it's price range. I just got the 20-39cs plus and Samson S1000 last week and I couldn't be happier.

Checkout the reviews here and and at www.svsubswoofers.com

It's one of the few things that's seems too good to be true but it really is true.

If you will be listening at reference levels (75 dbs - Video Essentials - 105 db peaks) then you will likely need dual subs with an area that large. If you have a spare amp or receiver laying around, your best bet would be to get two used SVS CS subs (non-powered subs). If you will be getting a powered sub and listen at reference levels you will need to get a sub now and then one later. In that regards you may want to consider: Aperion Audio SW-12, SVS 16-46PCi, possible dual HSU VTF-2, Adire Audio Dharman, Paradigm PW-2200, or build dual subs (right now you can get old SVS drivers for $40 + shipping on hometheaterforum).

Bryan -

Dual subs is likely out of the question, both for cost and aesthetic reasons. The SVS 16-46PCi is intriguing, but a bit too large for my tastes (though the 25-31 and 20-39 may work). However, if you are equating the 16-46PCi to the Paradigm PW-2200, then that might be a better option for me since the size is a bit more managable (and I also like the fact that it is available in finishes other than black).

Are you saying that those two subs are comparable?
