| Sub Size | _Luke_ Apr 1, 2002 8:39 PM | | My listening Room is 20'x18' with one doorway. Is there a particular size Sub I should be buying to satisfy my HT bass craving? Size does matter, I'd like a sub that is on the small side (or more accurately, my wife does) so I was considering a 10" or 12" but I want to make sure I'm going to have enough bass. I would go with two 10" before I'd go to 15".
Any thoughts? |
| It all depends on $$$ | midfiman Apr 2, 2002 6:12 AM | | There are 10" subs out there that have better bass output than some hefty 15".
The velodyne SPL10 that I have heard will outperform many mediocre 15" subs. However, it's all within reason.
Assuming that there is a reasonable budget, I feel a 10" or 12" sub would be a good combination of output, tight bass, and size, assuming you buy a quality one.
For the best value out there, pick up a RAVA from adireaudio.com. It's probably the most highly talked about sub on this website, and perhaps the most recommended. At $400, it sounds like a steal. |

Originally I had been considering a Sunfire, primarily for the bass to size ratio, but since being here, I've seen so many positive things about the Adire for 1/3 the price that it makes sense to consider diminishing returns and all that. I've gotten a number of good suggestions here, but it's a toss-up right now between the Adire and a DIY I've seen here as well.
I'm just trying to figure out if I'll need one or two 10" or if I can get away with a 12" or if there's a way to figure it out based on specs or if it's just an ear (and chest) thing.
Then I'm thinking that if I need two 10" subs (which I would stack anyway) then maybe I should just consider the SVS. I hadn't considered the SVS for aesthetic reasons, but if I'm going to stack multiple subs, then one SVS ain't so bad after all, and there's plenty of testimony here for them also. |

Perhaps go with dual Ravas or Dharmans or with a DIY sub such as the Tempest and stain/paint it to your wife's liking. |
