Rear Ported Speakers on Bookshelfbaby
Apr 3, 2002 6:09 AM
Hi,
Any way I can make Rear Ported speakers sound good on a bookshelf, or should I just give up and get Nonported or Front Ported speakers.
Thanks

A well made rear ported speaker should sound no different than a front ported speaker. The only thing of importance is that you have space behind it. You cannot put in in a closed shelf or against a wall.

Might be a stupid question but
can you line a closed shelf with sound absorbing material to make a rear ported speaker sound decent in the closed shelf?

You could do that but it wouldn't be a good idea. The port still needs room to breath. You are better off using a front ported or sealed speaker. Another option could be to put the speakers on top of the book case/entertainment center and angle them towards the listening position.
