They overall sound is very well controlled, but still very lively and impactful. At least with the standmounted models, I think the midrange accuracy is pretty stunning. Some listeners note that the highs are overemphasized, but I don't find that true. They're not perfect, but they'll easily hold their own against anything in their price class.
The B&W 600 series is another excellent option. It has a mellower sound than the Paradigms, and probably better overall tonal balance. B&Ws have an almost disciplined sound, with no major flaws. But, it still has a decent amount of kick, although with HT sources, I considered the sound somewhat detached and too laid back. The Paradigms have a more involving sound and really take you into the movie.
I've not auditioned the NHTs, so I can't offer an opinion on those. |
| B&Ws rule in the mids | TheAmazingJosh Apr 3, 2002 6:56 PM | | My experience has been the greatest strength of B&W is they have excellent mids, a real detail and rich clarity. |
| re: Paradigm Reference , B&W , NHT ... | RGA Apr 3, 2002 11:59 PM | | I really depends on which B&W you are looking at. I prefer the tonal balance of the B&W CDMNT line and I find their upper frequencies to be far smoother without the added brashness. The 600 series I agree with Woochifer. They are a little less in your face...and do everything well...but nothing spectacular. However, in this price range I would rather a speaker that has no overtly annoying characteristics that could lead to fatigue. Both Paradigm and NHT have strengths that in some areas are superior...but for me the overall sound is more important.
B&W is a very dynamic speaker I find...there is a misconception that they trade dynamics for refinement. some of the best home theatre systems I've heard involve B&W(though never with a receiver). Especially if you like the movie Amadeus - or any other big classical music scores...that includes Star Wars.
But, listen to both as long as you can...if you detect even a hint of brightness in the Paradigm...be patient whatever you do. That hint may irritate the snot out of you 6 months down the line...a number of posts here recently have made these claims.
On the other hand you may find as Woochifer and not notice or have this issue...if that's the case then keep them on the list.
Also Check out Mission for a different presentation...they're a wonderful speaker company. |
