When I auditioned those two speakers head to head, I gave a slight edge to the B&Ws. Among the speakers I listened to, the 602s were consistently good for all sources. I thought that the 5s had more pronounced highs and better punch in the bass, but they also had a less even overall tonal balance and some audible resonance. The 602s are pretty much unflappable with all sources and have no glaring faults. The only shortcoming is that they might be a bit too laid back for home theatre sources for some tastes. Make no mistake, the 5s are excellent speakers for the money, they just have a few notable weaknesses to go with their many strengths.

If you can up your budget by about $125, the Studio 20s present more formidable competition for the DM602s. You lose a little extension in the lower end by going with the 20s, but compared to the Monitor 5s, 20s have better tonal balance and tighter bass with a startlingly realistic midrange and less brightness in the highs. Its overall sound is more laid back than the Monitors, but not quite as mellow as the B&Ws. You should arrange to borrow these speakers so you can try them out for yourself at home.

I completely agree. but try NHT's new monitor. probably better than both in all aspects. also in that price range is a very good monitor by acoustic energy which has fluid sound, not as much punch as any of the others, but you might like.

I own Paradigm Monitor 7s. I bought them before I heard the B&W speakers. While the Paradigm speakers represent great value for the money spent, I have to give the nod to the B&W's. But should you for any reason decide on the Monitor 5's, you will still have made an excellent choice.
