Replacing speakers in auto with built in amp?Homegrown

Hiya

I drive an older Audi wagon that has rear speakers in the door with a built in Amp for each speaker attached to the housing. I went to a couple of shops that claim I must rewire the whole car from the headunit (Blaupunkt) or buy original factory speakers.

Why can't I just cut the speaker wire between the amp and speaker and replace with the same size speaker (5 1/4")using the original amp from the housing?

Is it worth buying a cheap pair just to try?

I can provide pics to anyone who thinks they can help!

Thanks
Kevin

If you can physically separate the amp from the old speaker, I would think that you can do what you want and replace the speakers. Keep in mind, however, that if the amp is using the housing as a heat sink or protection from water or whatever, then you will need to use the housing for those purposes.

You might also want to consider using the web site of Crutchfield for information on what might fit your particular car, and if you buy the speakers from them, they will be happy to give you advice.
